Can COD save the Vita?

PlayStation Vita sales are in a slump; whether that’s because of price, lack of games or gamers being happy with the mobile offerings available on smartphones is still up for debate.  It’s certainly not for lack of features of hardware spec, and because it sports twin thumbsticks would be the perfect platform for portable pew-pew-pewing.

Beyond the rather lacklustre Resistance: Burning Skies though, there are no first person shooters available. Call of Duty’s coming though – but could it actually help Sony sell a few systems? For their part in it, Activision wants to ensure that the first twin-sticked mobile Call of Duty is true to the COD experience.

"You can really expect us to deliver a true Call of Duty experience," Michael Sportouch, Activision’s European VP said to MCVUK of the portable shooter.  "We are really excited about the opportunities that the Vita could offer us in terms of connecting with a new audience."

There’s been little news about Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified to date, beyond a bit of marketing hyperbole, though it’s expected we’ll find out more at Gamescom, which kicks off this week.

"Optimized for gamers on-the-go, Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified delivers the most intense handheld Call of Duty experience to date, including both Special Ops Story mode and Multiplayer combat tailored for the PS Vita."

Sony’s recently admitted that its struggled to get 3rd party developers on board the Vita – largely because of the system’s low uptake. Hopefully Call of Duty gives it the much needed pick-me-up, dragging the device out of the doldrums. If there’s any single game that can – especially in the West – it’s Call of Duty.
