Can Kinect Teach You Kung Fu?

There are many who believe that Kinect is really only good for fitness and dancing games – and to a large extent they’re right. Even Kinect’s current flagship title, Kinect Star Wars’ most successful element is the ludicrous dancing minigame; I’m surprised they didn’t throw in Padme Amidala’s workout routines as an added extra.

Could Kinect be used for something more, like say, teaching you Kung-Fu?

That’s the aim of Kung Fu Superstar for Kinect, from Kinesthetic Games – a new studio from former Lionhead staffer Kostas Zarifis. In it, you’ll take on the role of Danny Cheng as he transitions from being an aspiring martial artist to Hollywood Kung-Fu action-hero. Kinect will track players’ full bodies as they learn “authentic martial arts techniques,” which they’ll then get to use on a digital movie set. Kinect is optional with this game – but using a controller pretty much nullifies the entire point.

“Players will relive the epic journey of Danny Cheng, a young aspiring martial artist, as he rises through the ranks of international fame and stardom. Aided by his trusted Sifu, Danny will discover the secrets of Kung Fu and become the most popular martial arts stuntman Hollywood has ever known.”

This debut trailer for the game is certainly interesting – but my own experiences with Kinect tell me that it’ll just end up devolving in to an all-body waggle fest; and though it certainly seems like it could teach you some genuine techniques – just how practical their application will be considering there’s no tactile feedback of any sort remains to be seen.
