Capcom charging money for respawns in new Resident Evil?

It was that guy's idea, shoot him

Capcom used to be the go to publisher for insanely terrible anti-consumer practices, and basically popularized the idea of locking on-disc content behind a paywall. They haven’t been too bad in recent memory, but that could change at any moment with any one of their new titles. Take Resident Evil Revelations 2, for example, which has some odd micro-transactions.

Revelations 2 sparked a massive debate on the internet last night, after it rumour suggested that Capcom would charge players for checkpoints and respawns in their episodic sequel. Considering Capcom’s track record, it’s nothing something anyone could immediately dismiss, but Kotaku reached out to the publisher for some clarification. And it’s all a little confusing.

Firstly, the main Revelations 2 campaign will not feature any micro-transactions, and have normal checkpoints like every game on this earth should. The included Raid Mode however, a fan favourite from the first title, will be hindered by either your dedication or depth of your wallet. Respawns in this run-and-gun side mode will be determined by Blue and Red crystals – one of which you can whip out your credit card for.

Both crystals are used for continues in the arcade-like mode. Blue crystals are earned by completing daily challenges, while red ones are bought using real money. They both function in the same way, with the game prioritizing hard earned blue ones over red. But if you’re wanting to get more from a mode that’s included in a game you’ve already paid for, you’re going to have to dig deep in your pockets for some change.

It’s identical to systems used in free-to-play phone games, not unlike Candy Crush. The issue here is that each episode of Revelations 2 costs $5, and purchasing the full, retail collection comes in at $40. It’s quite ridiculous that Capcom expects you to either grind or pay to have any sort of convince in a mode that should really be included with the entry fee.

Or maybe Capcom is just trying to make the entire thing really feel like a exploitative, money grabbing arcade mode – in which cases their hitting the nail right on the head. Resident Evil Revelations 2’s first episode is out next month. Make sure raid Mode isn’t your main draw.

  1. Personally, I feel Capcom has dealt with DLC the worst, more so than any other company. From paying for the true ending in Asura’s Wrath and on-disc DLC to paying money for freaking color swaps…sigh. In anycase still getting this as fuck me sideways and call me Meg Ryan, this is looking too lekker.

Tell me about it! I played and loved Asura’s Wrath, only to find out there were like 10 DLCs I needed and then had to pay for the ending? Never again.

Oh I am sure the SP is going to be awesome, but to sell a game at full retail, then take MORE money for this? Uh uh, something wrong here!

Yes well a few years back gamers said DLC sucks. Why do we need to pay. And i said back then i wont play or buy games with DLC simply of how the business model is to no longer sell you a game at full price. Instead they sell you half a game and you spend roughly 4 times that before you get the actual game.

For example BF3 was great until the first DLC’s came to light. Effectively if you want to keep playing online you need to pay for the other maps.

The point is. The industry would not have been able to do this if gamers werent just sheeping after their favorite title.

Its the gamers who created this culture. Not the dev’s.
If no one bought the damn DLC they would have said ah fck it… lets go back to just selling the entire game.

      But alas.

If the daily challenges aren’t too hard too complete then it’s fine I guess. Because then you can either play the game or use your credit card. The latter must please hand in their gaming card.

Tell me about it! Last night I showed up to Hyde Park all amped for the movie premiere I won from Lagz. As I walk into the theatre, THEY CUT THE POWER! Loadshedding! Nu Metro didn’t have a back up generator, and couldn’t find one in time either. So I had quite a nice conversation with another winner from Lagz, so the evening wasn’t a complete loss. I was bummed about the movie though.

That is my general impression. Also, I understand the personal contact is lost a bit at that bank. I enjoy having my banker on call, he helps out with small things I need done, like temp increase my monthly transfer limit or something. I like a person I know, that I can see when I need to.

Everything is online now. I have the platinum card, so I speak directly to the private banking division at RMB. But still, it is cold and emotionless. Its not like the old days where you actually saw a consultant or the bank manager.

I am on private banking at Standard Bank, but I see my person, and assistants. things are a little complex with my banking, but they sort things out very well. I like seeing someone, asking advice and then having a true professional in that field call me back, not to sell products, but to give advice.

Standard Bank Prestige Banking (where my wife is, on a spouse account) is almost like that, just without the extra people helping. And they always try to sell her products.

Same shit with Nedbank. They never answer the phone when you phone on a query, but when they flog stuff, they phone you until you cant take it anymore! Savings accounts, life insurance, upgrades, loans etc.

            January 28, 2015 at 16:18

My wife moved from them and she is amazed at the difference. Turns out she was a real person all along!

But I still think all banks are equally good and bad, for the most part. My guys at SB are good, but what if I moved to Cape Town? Same quality?
