Capcom is learning from its missteps says Dead Rising 3 producer

It's funny yeah it is

The last couple of years have not been kind to Capcom. Once a powerhouse company that could do no wrong, recent releases have either been absolute failures or just poor performers at retail. And with the gaming industry being as unforgiving as it is, such performances don’t bode well for even the biggest of developers. But Capcom could be poised for a return to solid gaming.

With games such as DmC: Devil May Cry, Resident Evil 6 and Lost Planet 3 faring badly at the gaming box office, Capcom has had to look deep and hard at why other titles such as Monster Hunter have done so much better in comparison. “Capcom is in a growth and adjustment period,” Capcom Vancouver’s Mike Jones said to OXM.

The game’s changed, new consoles are coming out… Everything’s not out there in the open, right? There are portfolio discussions about next gen and mobile and digital and all this kind of stuff. They’re well aware of our history, our strong properties, strong franchises, and they absolutely want to make the best content for gamers.

I promise you that everybody who works at Capcom is a huge Capcom fan. There’s nobody who works at Capcom who’s like ‘yeah, whatever’ – most people f**king love Capcom. So they’re definitely having all the right discussions, but it’s a big company, a big global company, and it’s hard to get all those pieces moving in the right direction quickly.

As for the fact that Capcom has had more misses than hits this year, Jones thinks that Capcom will be due for a comeback with the new console generation. “I think as the new console generation develops, there’s a lot of new stuff coming,” Jones said.

Deep Down on PS4, Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One, trying to bring back Strider… Capcom’s had its missteps, it’s learning, it’s definitely trying to make quality content – if nothing else, I can say that Capcom has always valued quality. That message might not always seem obvious, but definitely from the inside, I can promise you that their decisions are based on getting the best quality content.

Sometimes they make mistakes. Sometimes they work with partners who – sometimes games won’t come out right, because there isn’t enough funding or time or whatever it is, but they’re trying and I think they’re on the right track.

If you look at their track record over the past year or two, there have been some successes in there, some failures in there, and a lot of lessons to be learned, people are listening and they’re learning, and I think you’ll see a lot of big stuff over the next couple of years.

The last thing I want to see is for an iconic game developer to fail. Capcom is responsible for plenty of games that helped shape gamers all across the world, but they’ve lost that touch in recent years. Dead Rising 3 though, might be a return to form that I’m hoping will signal the start of a new age for the company.

And if they’ve genuinely learnt from all the flops they’ve released in recent years, that’ll make me a very happy man.

Do you think Capcom can turn things around? Have you tried Dead Rising 3 yet? Let us know what you think below.

That might actually be a good marketing strategy.

Oh you guys always talking about megaman… do you realize megaman fans are not really that many nowdays? A megaman game won’t really make that much money to begin with… As much as I love megaman I realize there’s not really a market for that…

Really? Are you serious? Yeah there may not be as big of a market for it as there could be if they had capitalized on making one years ago instead of these stupid half baked “Ultra Super Commando” editions of games selling at close to full price games. It’s very telling though and completely lays to rest your claims that it’s not in demand is how the co-founder/founder of Mega-man that started his own studio and had a Kickstarter for a game called Mighty Number 9 which is a spiritual successor to Mega-Man reached 3 million almost 4 million raised in funds to make the game with a total of 67,226 backers all in the span of about a month. IMO Mega-Man can be big again if Capcom would actually invest money/resources in it and could make Capcom ALOT of money especially in comparison to some of there high dollar flops. The interest/fanbase is there Capcom just hasn’t come to realize how badly they need a game like Mega-Man and how much the fans want one(hence the huge Kickstarter success of Mighty Number 9).

Their Ducktales remake wasn’t bad at all and Darkstalkers Resurrection was worth the moolah. They need to look at their older games like Final Fight, Ghouls and Ghosts or even UN Squadron. Draw inspiration from the games that are still fun to play today and funnily enough is better than Lost Planet 3 or RES6.

Honestly… I’d agree with ya. I picked it up cheap recently and it’s a helluva lot of fun. Graphics are good, gameplay is fluid and fun and the fact that you keep unlocking new moves as you level up means enemy encounters are always new and interesting as you try out that latest move. Seriously good game in my book.

Even the story keeps you interested to find out what’s next (it’s not Oscar material, but it works).

Lol. Halfbaked Xbone game and some crappy F2P game for PS4 nobody likes? Yeah, Capcom learned much lol. The only way i gonna care about Capcom is when they start to take good care of old franchises as DMC, Megaman, RE, Onimusha, etc. Until than…. well lol Crapcom

Makes me glad to be a 3DS owner as it feels like that’s where some of their better offerings have been as of late. Still, the lack of MML3 or NA/EU announcements for MH4 is irritating.

Bring back Mega Man, and please make it clear that the new studio you founded with MH profits was actually geared towards both portables (Vita/3DS) and mobile, not just mobile. Good gosh is that market contracting/about to crash.

Does this mean that Capcom wont force people to pay for content that is already on the disc? Example: Locked “DLC.” Because that’s been a serious dealbreaker for me. Dragon’s Dogma is a perfect example (From A Different Sky namely).
