Capcom responds to MaXplosion furore

Yesterday, Geoff posted a piece on Capcom’s despicable theft of Twisted Pixel’s Xbox Live Arcade game, ‘Splosion Man. In case you weren’t around, the developer and publisher that brought gamers Mega Man has produced a shameless clone of ‘Splosion Man for the iOS called MaXplosion. There are videos of the game over on Geoff’s post.

The backlash that Capcom received since this news broke must be the biggest PR disaster the company has ever experienced, and if it is then that’s excellent because they completely deserve it. They have responded to the deserved criticism and released a statement.

“While Twisted Pixel did have discussions with our console game team about publishing ‘Splosion Man’ on game consoles, Capcom Mobile is a different division of Capcom with separate offices and as such, had no prior knowledge of any meetings between the console game team and Twisted Pixel.

“‘MaXplosion’ was developed independently by Capcom Mobile. Nonetheless, we are saddened by this situation and hope to rebuild the trust of our fans and friends in the gaming community.”

So parent company Capcom had no idea what their subsidiary company, Capcom Mobile was making? And Capcom mobile was so involved in tirelessly producing the most original and brilliant mobile games that they never knew that a game like ‘Splosion Man (which released in 2009) even existed? Whatever Capcom; I think you just made this worse.

Twisted Pixel has said that they won’t be taking legal action against Capcom for a number of reasons. The most obvious is that they’re simply too small and lack the funding to take on a giant like Capcom. Another reason is that they just want to focus on making games “so that Capcom has something to steal next year”.

  1. Do you remember when Capcom used to be the cool company? The one that made Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Megaman etc., fast forward a decade and they’ve mutated into one of the worst companies around. Dead Rising 2 on PS3? Missing DLC for the PS3 version? Overpriced DLC on the xbox 360? 400pts for a costume for my SF4 character? Say hello to CRAPCOM!

Crapcom is definitely one of the worst now (Square Enix, Activision and EA are the other).

That’s such a cop out press release, it’s a blatant copy and they should either be pulling the title or sending all the profits where they belong

    I’m still disappointed with Capcom.

I am, however, thrilled with Lazy Gamer. The header image is CLASSIC for this! ^_^
