Cheat your way to victory (and 60fps!) in The Evil Within

Remember back when games had cheat codes or console commands to allow you to cheat your way to winning? These days, you’re more likely to have to pay for the privilege of using cheat codes in anything but GTA. The Evil Within actually has these, in the form of old-school debug codes. But more than just for cheating, they allow you to unlock the game’s frame rate.

For some or other reason, the PC version of Shinji Mikami’s survival horror is locked to 30fps.  Bethesda, however, have included a little bit of debugging to allow those of you sporting the hardware to take it to 60 fps and beyond. Here’s how.

To access the debug console, do the following:

  1. In Steam, right click on The Evil Within and select “properties” then under the General tab, hit “set launch options.”
  2. Put this in to unlock the console: +com_allowconsole 1
  3. Once the game has launched, hit the Insert key to bring down the developer console.

These are the commands you can use and some notes about each:

  • R_swapinterval <NUMBER>
    • Sets the FPS lock. Note that the numbers below are negative.
    • -2: This is the default, set to 30 FPS. This is the officially supported frame rate
    • -1: This sets the FPS limit to 60. Fully playable, although there may be quirks (we’re going to fix these).
    • 0: This fully unlocks the FPS. We do not recommend playing above 60. We will not fix any issues above 60.
  • God
    • God mode. You are effectively invincible, and certain enemy kill moves will not be used against you (Laura, for example, will not jump on you)
  • Noclip
    • Allows you to walk through walls
  • G_infiniteammo
    • Unlimited ammo (provided you have at least 1 bullet when you enable this)
  • G_stoptime 1
    • Stops time. Note there is a bug right now where using this command causes a UI element to appear on screen. We’re looking to fix that in the near future.
    • Re enable time with g_stoptime 0
  • Toggledebugcamera
    • Separates the camera from Sebastian so you can freely move around the
  • R_forceaspectratio <NUMBER>
    • Sets the aspect ratio. Default is 2.5, which is our official aspect ratio.
    • 0 is full screen, but not ideal. 1.8 or 2 is probably most comfortable for those who don’t want bars.
  • Com_showFPS
    • Turns on id’s native FPS counter
  • Startslowmotion2
    • Slows down time
  • Stopslowmotion
    • Disables slow motion

While some of these may be the sort of things that’ll ruin the game, the 60fps frame unlock can only make it better, right? Right. There is no magical switch to get the console versions to run above 30fps.

“the PC version of Shinji Mikami’s survival horror is locked to 30fps, even on PC.” What else would you play it on? ;P

Day 1 obviously. These developers…or should I say crooks, are ruining the industry with their frame locking nonsense.

Its going to be exactly the same as last gen in 2007. The promises of the new SONY BRAVIA running native 1080p 60fps SONY PS3 games with most of the launch titles like Wipeout HD kicking the shit out of the 360 that can only upscale from 720p.

Then after a little time they realise that production budget can literally get halved by going back down to 720p 30fps. Hardly any games except for a few 1st party titles actually used the full potential of the PS3.

UBISOFT is right. Now that the consoles have their install base thanks to some very expensive production budgets for the likes of TLOU proving just what these consoles should be capable of.

Money talks. Expect all next gen games to be locked at 30fps 900p.

Some of my favourite “cheat” codes consist of in HL or HL2 or JK2 or JK3 spawning NPCs from both sides, AND HAVE THEM FIGHT IT OUT!!!

I always played with the console commands for realistic light sabre combat (1hit kills with sabre, and if you get hit once you also die) and limb dismemberment set to 5. 😛

ive been playing the game since 2006.
has a pretty massive learning curve, but the freedom the game offers you is pretty exciting.
I actually feature in the trailer at 0:51 for the customization section.
definitely worth a look if you enjoy messing with console settings.
