Check out the beautiful visuals of the Tokyo Game Show 2014

Tokyo-drift

I’ve been to a number of trade shows, but I’ve yet to turn in a solid hat trick for my E3 and Gamescom trips by throwing the Tokyo Games Show into the mix. It’s the one show that I’d be both excited and terrified to travel. Excited because Japan! Terrified because I’m the kind of guy who gets hopelessly lost in countries where people speak a language that I understand.

Anyway, check out the posters for TGS 2014. They’re all inspired by the new themes for the show, which happen to be “change” and “transformation”.

TGS Poster (5)TGS Poster (1)TGS Poster (2)TGS Poster (3)TGS Poster (4)

“I created this year’s main visual by visualizing the “emergence” based on the keyword change/transformation in the theme” artist Ippei Gyoubu said to Gematsu.

A caterpillar becomes a chrysalis, breaks down its body and reconstructs itself to be born as a completely different creature. In a gaming world, technological innovation has evolved in the last 10 years and now that we’ve passed through the revolutions such as internet, social media and smartphone, I feel that we’ve come close to the time of the birth of a completely new world with all those revolutions blending well.

I created this visual based on that feeling. This main visual expresses the ambiguity of whether the visual is a reflection of the metal or not, it’s a flat graphic or not, it’s stereoscopic or planar, and she’s a human or a robot.

It’s some pretty damn stunning art, and I’d love to have this kind of stuff framed and mounted on my wall next to my hunting trophies of murdered hipsters KFC takeaways. The Tokyo Game Show takes place in Chiba from September 18 – 21.

Hopefully this year, we’ll get some of that change that the Japanese gaming industry needs rather badly right now.

The worst is they post “I’m so sad/angry/depressed”
Their friends reply what’s wrong and then they reply “nothing……”

I don’t need FB to get that.

          “I’m sad.”
          “Why?”
          “I don’t know.”

Apparently “well let me know once you figure it out” isn’t the correct reply.

“Don’t you just hate it when…….”

            “What happened?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

I don’t feel they need to change, they need to focus on what they do best, leave that Loli shit alone too, flip, they’re capable of making THE BEST games in the industry….So many of the games that changed this industry forever came from Japan….Sigh…

Erm? Their business model is 30 years old, they are bleeding money faster than a character from Game of Thrones and they need adult games that don’t include rubbing the screen of a 3DS on a train! Adaptation man!

Dude, they don’t need adaptation, did it ever occur to you that maybe this industry is SICK? Japan needs to channel that creative energy and focus on their strengths. They can revolutionize gaming and they made some of the best games in existence. They need to stop trying to imitate the west because in all honesty, they western games are fucked up. Money Money Money is ALL that’s important here.

Alos, Japan needs to stop with all these pervy games

The problem is they are not revolutionising. Look at the same stuff offered year after year from, Pokermon, Mario, JRPGs that are a ‘just add water’ generic offshoot. Japan was once innovative, they aren’t now, which is why NINTENDO/CAPCOM are sick (as one example), has nothing to do with them trying to imitate the west. The west pulls in 1 billion in a week with GTAV and more money with kak like CoD. When was the last time a Japanese game this big? They failed with their Wii U because they are so scared of innovation they couldn’t even change the frigging name. The Japanese have always been known to be traditionalists, time to change, they lost that when they had their own people leave Final Fantasy to go over to Lost Odyssey.

Thing is right. They’re not revolutionizing , but they still have that capability to make something revolutionary. I’m probably wording myself incorrectly . When I say they shouldn’t change. I’m talking about the games. I mean look how they butchered FF 13 trying to make it more appealing to the action orientated western gamers….They need to focus on what they do best…Maybe their business models should change and I can agree with you there tbh. But my main point is, they have what it takes to make AMAZING games…the fact of the matter is….They will never pull off what CoD or GTA V can do, and THAT is why this industry is SICK because if you can’t pull off CoD like sales then you’re on the game is deemed a failure, regardless of where the game comes from (Tomb Raider and Sleeping Dogs for example)…But yeah, I can agree they need to get with the times. Look at Nintendo, no idea how to implement an online infrastructure in this day and age

Agreed. They need to stick with what they know to a certain degree but also change, sticking with Mario (although great) has not made them popular. I still cannot understand how they could lose Lost Odyssey to MS, I mean ffs. Their own turning on them? You know there is something wrong when that happens, as you do when their CEOs start taking 50% paycuts because they look like damn fools.

Butchered trying to imitate west. Look at how well Bravely Default did, a classic JRPG was more successful than any of their other kak. They can still make great games

          • RinceofFuturePast

            May 27, 2014 at 15:21

            May 27, 2014 at 15:23

I meant another. Yeah, it was a good game but it is hardly a NEW game, it’s another good JRPG. Where is the innovation in that?

          • Umar_Zero

            May 27, 2014 at 15:26

Dude, have you played it??…..It’s one of the best JRPGs in YEARS….JRPG is still a relevant genre lol

          • RinceofFuturePast

            May 27, 2014 at 15:27

It is relevant… IN JAPAN 😛 You damn idiot teheheh And this is an exception in many years as you well know (well, no, fanboys look at every single JRPG as being DA BIST!) RUNS

          • Umar_Zero

            May 27, 2014 at 15:28

LOL No it’s not. SE took a risk releasing Bravely Default here, they thought it was gonna fail…did it? NO! ….. Get your facts straight. And just btw, a lot of JRPGS sucked over the years… A LOT

          • RinceofFuturePast

            May 27, 2014 at 15:29

As far as sales went, no, it was not a huge success actually. EDIT: My facts were straight, I said it was an exception, though one that didn’t even come close to the ‘failure’ of Tomb Raider’s sales figures.

          • Umar_Zero

            May 27, 2014 at 15:34

Aaaaaaaaand back to my original statement, the industry is sick. It did extremely well for a new IP and a JRPG at that. What do you expect? which games sells the most dude…COD…ASS creed, Fifa, Battlefield….This is a 3DS JRPG. You know how niche that is? And for it to do the sales it did was great! Fact of the matter is, most games can’t pull in TONS of cash anymore unless they fall into a certain category. Tomb Raider did poorly…Sleeping Dogs did poorly….and you know they were some of the best games to date. What about Spec Ops?……Bravely default stands as a testament to the fact that if Japan does what they do best, they can still be successful (Even if it’s not CoD level successful)

          • RinceofFuturePast

            May 27, 2014 at 15:40

Japan does JRPGs best of course! They aren’t called ARPGs now are they 😛 Bravely is one the few JRPGS that made it to the west too yes, but constantly making, as you point out, NICHE games is not going to expand their market. Just like constantly making games like COD (that actually make money) is going to piss off people in the west, which it has done.
