China Censors Online Game Ads

China, continuing its run of autocratic censorship has now banned – and tears are streaming down my face as I write this – vulgar and explicit material for use in online advertising. Sex and violence – as we know – sell things, but it looks as if they’ll no longer be used to sell online games in China.

China’s Ministry of Culture has made it so that boobs can now longer be used to advertise popular online games like Dahua Xuanyuan, Evony, Kingory and the like.

This all came about after the company behind Dahua Xuanyuan hired sexy “art” model Zhang Xiaoyu as its spokesperson. The game went on to become a massive hit and started a copycat trend that saw developer 9you.com hire Sola Aoi, a Japanese adult video star to promote its game, Warrior OL. It’s now pretty common practice to use sexy womenfolk as marketing.

Not anymore though – because it’s “unwholesome,” apparently.

The new rule comes in to effect on August 1. Personally, I don’t see the point of using sexy women to advertise anything. Porn is free on the internet, after all.
