Cliffy B’s big return is a free-to-play shooter

Earlier this week Cliff Bleszinski, the mind behind Gears of War, revealed his new studio Boss Key Productions. The official website suggested that his long rumoured project, Blue Streak, would end up being the studio’s first game, and yesterday the man himself confirmed the news.

I’m not sure many people expected Bleszinski’s big return to game development to sound so bland though. Project Blue Streak is a free-to-play sci-fi arena shooter, which immediately just makes me think of another Unreal Tournament, another game Cliffy B worked in during his time at Epic Games.

The title will be a PC exclusive with Boss Key Productions teaming up with Nexon for publication. Nexon is a Tokyo based company that specialises in online free-to-play titles, so no surprises there.

As expected, Cliff B didn’t take too kindly to people claiming that the idea was boring, but he also didn’t give us much to go on. No trailer. No gameplay footage. Not even a lonely screenshot. In a tweet, Bleszinski explained that he didn’t want to use some “fake CG” trailer to reveal his game, and would rather let it speak for itself. You know, when he actually has something to show.

He did promise to answer some questions regarding the game later today. High on his agenda is explaining why his game is a shooter and not a MOBA, although Gearbox seemingly did one better and combined the two anyway. Without anything to go on, I can’t really say whether I’m excited or not just yet.

He’s been at the helm of some truly amazing games in the past, but free-to-play is a slippery slope. Just ask Crytek.

F2P? The same guy who screamed like an anime schoolgirl at a Justin Bieber concert that he should get a cut of second hand game sales?

It makes sense really. By going free-2-play he can slap on microtransactions and continue to get cash for the entire lifespan of however long people want to play the game.

That means no second hand sales and just pure constant cash flow from people who can’t resist microtransactions

I wouldn’t call it irony really. I’d call it that if he lambasted the F2P model only to do this.

This just seems like a logical progression. He wanted money from 2nd hand. Couldn’t get it, so decided to go the microtransaction F2P route so that there can be no 2nd hand sales of his game

Yeah I cannot say I am surprised by F2P route given his hate of 2nd hand market.

Cliffy can be an asshole sometimes, but this man does have a knack for creating great games. I actually really want to know more about Blue Streak now

I wouldn’t be surprised if Bosskey isn’t a play on his surname… and he’s calling himself a boss, because he’s modest that way.

HAHAHA oh wow. I’ve been watching the transparent development with Star Citizen. I’m seriously considering joining Twitter now just to follow this. He’ll lose his mind once people start commenting on his development. It’s like a train wreck just waiting to happen.

Dunno hey. I don’t like him, but I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. It’s not just the trolls, it’s the stupids, the entitled, the whiners, the intellectuals, etc & the various combinations thereof.

All of which he regularly calls out. He wants to call out everyone in the industry so let him eat that which he has dished out….but He’s used to handling it though I guess. With an ego like that he’s bound to have picked up the necessary defenses

Yeah, urm… Question… Why does a game have to be an FPS or MOBA? Why not other genres? Why go for one of the 2 go to genres? Seriously?
