Control gets a performance patch for PS4, coming to other platforms soon

Control, from Max Payne and Alan Wake maker Remedy, is a lovely game – and one of my favourite games of the years so far. It’s a mind-fuck of a game that blends Metroidvania-styled exploration with tight 3rd person shooter mechanics and super powers, all wrapped up in some intriguing, eyebrow-raising exposition.

“Control is an intriguing, fascinating experience. The third-person action, while slick and elegant, is perhaps a little pedestrian – but the completely bonkers story and the rewarding sense of exploration and discovery help cement Control as one of Remedy’s best games.”

I played it on PC, where it is the poster child for RTX implementation, with its reflected and scattered light make a pretty good case for a GPU upgrade. Unfortunately, its console performance left a lot to be desired. While playable, the game frequently stuttered, almost chugging down to single-digit frame rates. It also had an issue where loading the game’s very necessary map didn’t Work. They’re issues that’ve now been fixed…on PlayStation 4 at least. According to Remedy, patches for the Pc and Xbox One versions of the game are coming soon, to tighten things up on those platforms too. Point is, if you’ve been holding out on one of the year’s finest games because you’ve been concerned about its performance, it should all be a bit better now. I mean, you should play it for what is one of the best missions in a video game in ages. You’ll know which one I’m talking about if you’ve played it.

Here’s a list of what’s coming to the other platforms soon, and is already changed in the PS4 version:

  • Improved map loading times (map will no longer tease information)
  • Motion Blur On/Off toggle added to Options menu
  • Film Grain On/Off toggle added to Options menu
  • Fixed incorrect UI behaviour on ultra-wide monitors (PC)
  • Fixed multiple issues when incorrect subtitles are shown for multiple languages
  • Fixed issue when the game centers the aim on Jesse’s head
  • Fixed multiple UI related issues

Progression:

  • Fixed an issue when player could not acquire ‘Pierce Charging Efficiency’ and ‘Spin Grouping Efficiency’ upgrade
  • Fixed issue when crafting Charge and personal Mods would not give the Weapon/Mod but take the materials (Sorry. The Board was greedy)
  • Fixed issue that prevented players activating the Pierce weapon form upgrade
  • Fixed issue when Jesse is unable to cleanse the ‘Transit Corridor South’ Control point upon returning from Prime Candidate Program area in the mission The Face of the Enemy
  • Fixed an issue when Heptonstall would not spawn during certain story missions in the “Old Friends” side-mission (still looking for his buddy Remus)
  • Fixed issue when Hiss Barrier remains in the Directorial Override mission’s Control Room if the player dies during the binding cut scene

Sound:

  • Fixed issue when certain licensed music tracks play after enabling the ‘Mute Copyrighted Tracks’ option
  • Fixed an issue when audio is out of sync in the Dr Darling videos (PS4)

Misc:

  • Fixed issue with the Charge weapon forms erroneous blast radius causing (way) too much visual damage to the environments
  • Fixed an issue where game would stall when completing a story mission and unlocking a trophy (PS4)

There is times when there is a lot happening on the screen and the game just lags the hell out of itself… But then I take Control of the situation and kill many things quickly… The end of the problem right there. Really enjoying the game!
