At the end of next month, online gaming server and matchmaking provider GameSpy will be shutting down its servers for good. This will affect every single one of the hundreds of games that utilise the service – with many losing multiplayer functionality completely. Included in the list of games that you’ll no longer be able to play online after 31 May 2014? Crysis.
“As of May 31 this year, the multiplayer modes in Crysis and Crysis 2 for PC will no longer be playable. The conclusion of online multiplayer support comes as a result of GameSpy Technology shutting down all their hosting services. GameSpy have been providing multiplayer functionality for Crysis and Crysis 2 since they launched. The single-player campaigns in both games are unaffected by this transition, and the multiplayer mode in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 versions of Crysis 2 remain playable.”
"We’d like to thank everyone who has taken up arms in Crysis and Crysis 2’s multiplayer modes in the last few years, and apologize to the small but dedicated community of PC players who are still actively competing against one another,” Crytek said in a post.
If you want to mess around in the first Crysis’ still impressive sandbox, you have a month and a half left to do it. EA, for it’s part, has said that it’ll be transitioning some of its other games – most notably its Battlefield titles - to work without the need for Gamespy.
@Tofugames We’re working on transitioning those games after the shut down so you’ll still be able to play them.

Hundreds of games including those made by EA, Ubisoft, Gearbox, Nintendo, Konami, and just about every other publisher you’ve ever heard of may be taken offline when the GameSpy servers are shut down. If there’s a game you love playing online –whether it’s an older game or not – you might want to check if it relies on GameSpy as you may have very little time left to get your multiplayer jollies before the plug gets pulled.
Red Dead Redemption, Civilization IV, Grand Theft Auto IV, SEGA & Sonic All-Stars Racing, and even Borderlands use Gamespy for matchmaking, though Rockstar’s confirmed it’ll ensure its games will still be playable. Activision, likewise has said none of its games will be affected.

And that is the reason I don’t support games that has a monthly subscription or can only be played online. The day the server die, the game die as well.

Chrysis? What do you mean? A genus of cuckoo wasps in the family Chrysididae, the priestess at the ancient Greek sanctuary of Hera at Argos at the time of the Peloponesian War or the member of the Hot Peaches troupe that appeared briefly in the 1968 documentary The Queen?
