Crytek has just joined the ranks of Dice and Avalanche studios who have been rather out spoken of late about what they would like to see in a future generation of consoles. The German studio’s principle graphics engineer Tiago Sousa recently stated in a discussion with Eurogamer that the next generation of consoles should have “a minimum†of 8GB’s of RAM.
Comparatively, while the average PC requires 3GB of RAM to run Crysis 2, at present both the 360 and the PS3 are running on 512MB of DDR3 RAM, which Sousa described as “the biggest crippling factor from a visual perspective.â€
Unfortunately for Crytek it would seem that when their CEO Cevat Yerli made the prediction back in 2008 that the new generation of consoles from Microsoft and Sony would hit in 3-4 years time, it was primarily based on where he felt Crytek would be at that point.
Judging by Sousa’s recent comments, it would seem that Crytek is right on schedule, sadly with no official announcement from Sony or Microsoft, and huge amounts of money having been invested in the encouragement of motion controllers and the overhauling of their existing consoles, it seems rather unlikely that an announcement is just around the corner.
