Crytek’s “Codename : Kingdoms” will push the 360 to its limits

Kingdoms

Crytek, creators of Crysis and users of remarkable hyperbole are now claiming that their Xbox 360 exclusive “Codename : Kingdoms” will not only push the console "to its limits," it will also offer gamers  "a genuinely new" interactive entertainment experience.

Sure, they are known for stretching the capabilities of graphics hardware, but a new interactive experience? That sounds mighty similar to the rhetoric Microsoft’s been issuing with regards to Kinect. Could Crytek’s gladiatorial game be Kinect enabled? Possibly.

"… I think when we put Crysis 2 out we will show a level that is, multiplatform-wise, maxing out, but we will look into with Microsoft how Kingdoms can push the Xbox 360 110 percent, to its limits,” Crytek boss Cervat Yerli told CVG. I certainly hope they don;t take the 360 to its limits; it’d spark a whole new wave of overheating, red-ringed consoles.

"When you’re spending a multimillion budget only on the Xbox 360, that team will be able to crank out the last two or three percent left in the console. But I think that two or three percent will make the difference potentially between day and night that you cannot afford if you go multiplatform."

Speaking later, diverging from the topic of kingdoms, Yerli said "Kinect games are currently very casual, mainstream focused and designed to expand the market, but within two or three years it may be that Kinect plays home to triple-A productions." Triple-A productions like Crytek’s Kingdoms?

"I don’t know," he said. "Maybe, maybe not."

I hope all this wanton hyperbole isn’t for naught – and that 360 owners have something genuinely exciting to look forward to in Kingdoms.

It should be interesting, but this is a wasted opportunity for Crytek. Just look at what a sham Adam Wake was (granted it wasn’t a bad game, but it’s clear it could have been so..sooo… much more, instead we got a watered-down game, that was hyped to infinity, but only with mere glimpses of greatness).

The major limitation was the Xbox 360s hardware.

Codename Kingdoms could have been a true showcase console game for Crytek (much as Crysis will be), had they gone for the PS3. Imagine what goodness could have been crammed on a blue ray disk…

    Ah well…

In any case, I’ll be watching this carefully, hopefully they can deliver something spectacular for the box.

I liked Adam Wake way more than Alan Wake to be honest.

Adam Wake sounds like an obese pro-wrestler with a moustache and a mullet (kind of like Nato). 😛

There’s one thing ive learnt about Crytek after playing crysis and crysis warhead….they have the skills of a chimpanzee when it come to optimizing their games to run on REASONABLE System specs, why bother crytek, if you can only make a game look good if it has 10GIG of ram, runs on i7 processors and requires a graphics card that does not even yet exist!

So true Ians, so true. Crysis was basically a middle finger to the vast majority of gamers with average system specs. It actually looked terrible, if you didn’t own a top of the line graphics card or setup.

One thing that’s so typical of you bias people, is that you criticize the game BEFORE YOU HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN IT. It’s like you WANT then to fail. Grow up, you’re not fooling anyone.

I think they have the potential to make this a very good game

As opposed to praising it before we know what it is? Yeah that worked perfectly for Alan Wake. 😛
