CS:GO pro’s casual statement raises questions of eSports doping rules

Lance armstrong notebook

I like to laugh about doping rules in sports – the line between what’s allowed and what isn’t, and that whole Lance Armstrong debacle, it’s all just a bit mess. But eSports should be easier, right? I mean, players can’t do much to improve their physical abilities, but they can take drugs for mental acuity, and apparently that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Here is an interview with “Semphis” where he talks about drug use during ESL:

While hearing him say it is pretty awful, reading the words in transcript is even worse:

Semphis: Yea that’s my main issue with him, it worked for years in 1.6 I used to always give ideas and it worked and then in GO the same thing. The ESL comms were kinda funny in my opinion, I don’t even care, we were all on adderall [laughs] Launders: Really? [laughs] Semphis: I don’t even give a fuck, like its pretty obvious if you listen to the comms, I don’t know people can hate it or whatever.
Launders: Everyone does adderall at ESEA LAN right?
Semphis: Yea
Launders: Just throwing that out there for the fans, that’s how ya get good
Semphis: And you can hear it in the comms right, that’s what was so funny to me like shit comms so hectic like yea, so yea that might clear up some of the questions of why it was like that.

I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that he’s so open about the fact that everyone does Adderall at the LAN, or that the interviewer goes so far as to tell the audience that they should do it too if they want to be better eSports athletes. It just goes to show that this wasn’t a shocking confession, but simply a public statement of what people already knew to be the case.

Now we have to look at the greater implications of this. Does Adderall make players better, and if so, could it be classified as a performance enhancing drug? I understand that eSports is a new thing still and the rules around doping are pretty much nonexistent, but it might be about time that the leagues implement some basic rules. It will be a difficult line to draw considering the amount of caffeine, alcohol and other recreational substances that players choose to put in their bodies, but it might be time for the eSports world to address this issue.

At the very least, sponsors will need to evaluate if they really want to get behind a game and a tournament that is known for illegal drug use.

Doping in any form is pathetic. If you are not good enough, then tough cookies.

doping is cheating, but can only be called cheating in the rules if it is addressed. Let us assume the rules have now banned any form of stimulant higher than coffee (not starbucks, look it up – so much caffeine )

So what, send a nurse to each players house at the exact time of the match? Hmm, tricky one to actually enfoce. If at an event thought, pee in cups people.

    What is Adderall?
    Is it actually illegal?
Are they sure it is actually Adderall and not a placebo or something else entirely?
Does it actually do anything to improve performance?
Should money be wasted trying to answer all these questions?
(I bet the committee they put together to look into this struggles to answer question 1)

Adderall is a psychostimulant drug of the phenethylamine class used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy.

NOW that is a advantage I want my kid to have, so big and so amazing is the world around us. She must learn, and learn as much as possible. More importantly she must know how to find out for herself. (maybe I am pushing a bit now at 20 months, but you get the idea).

Ipad at a young age, a must I think. She must learn, she must have every singly advantage I can give her.

            Good on yer.

I read Lord of the Rings at age 9, Clan of Cave bear (sex, oh my) same age. All unprompted. At age six, when I first learnt to read, I read all the school readers up till Std 2 (grade 4) by tthe end of the first year. All unprompted. I wanted to know everything, I saw books as my ticket. Keep up with gentle prodding, but think carefully about forcing a direction.

When my family tried to prompt me, read Dickens and so forth, it went badly. I did not like it, but they liked it that I was reading the classics

It treats ADHD and is effectively a few steps away from cocaine or somesuch. It is not such a “picker upper” as all that though, at least for me in legal doses. Perhaps higher dosages causes a small boost in reflex speed or something.

BUT it would provide the brain with more focus. So it would certainly help.

*Edit* too much would certainly slow you down., as in too fast, making mistakes

helps you focus for longer. attention span etc.
for games like cs:go and CoD, which do like 3 sets of 23 games per match, its tough, when you get 3 hours into a comp series you start taking shortcuts and making mistakes, taking an adderall/ritalin at the start of the second round seems like pretty standard practise.

aderall is prescription based, iirc i was upped to it for my matric finals, or whatever the local generic of it is.

using it for “doping” is obviously not cool, but thinking back to what we do and who we are, it makes sense.
kids playing games all day, with no outlet for their energy, most pro gamers will be massively ADD, for the older gamers, it would have been a thing for years and stuff like adderall is often necessary.

if anything, they should include light generics with every xbox one sold to anyone under the age of 18. no more 14 year olds screaming on VOIP. xbox branded Ritalin / adderall sounds legit(to be taken with a pinch of salt)
