Dead Rising 3 will have more freedom

BRAINS! I MEAN FREEDOM!

Despite being a sandbox title, previous Dead Rising games were pretty much scripted mission events with an emphasis on getting the job done. While those time limits were a defining feature of those games, they were also a facet of it that a ton of folks hated. And for Dead Rising 3, expect to have some more freedom.

Speaking to the LA Times via OXM, executive producer Josh Bridge explained how this Dead Rising would be less of a long walk to freedom than previous entries in the franchise. “It’s the sheer freedom that you have within to play how you want, experience it how you want,” Bridge said

The past instalments were relatively regimented and you were kind of forced along at a particular rate of time. Now we’ve unlocked that to really let you explore this world. We went deeper with more stuff to interact with, more areas to explore, it just feels like a much richer world as a result.

One aspect of the game being shown off is a use for SmartGlass, which means that players can finally blow the digital dust off of that app. According to Bridge, that application is meant to extend the world of Dead Rising 3 onto mobile devices through calls, apps and text messages from characters. Presumably about wanting to go bowling every five minutes.

“We have a feature in the game that essentially interweaves through the story and tells its own story with its own character. It’s as though the game kind of comes out of the screen and you’re literally holding it in your hand,” Bridge said.

You’ll get calls from this character, text messages and just additional game play from this device, which is kind of cool. We geeked out on it because it was cool just to have our phones be part of the game. It’s something we were surprised by, how many folks were really excited by that.

It’s new for us as developers to have this opportunity that we haven’t had before, and now going onto Xbox One we had this. We tried to really run with it and tried to give it its own character, essentially.

Dead Rising 3 looked plenty solid at E3, as Geoff would tell you. It sounds like an interesting approach so far to broadening the appeal of the game, and if not having a time limit to deal with irks you, fret not. The game will have that option for the hardcore crowd.
