Its hard to believe, but its already been over four years since the Assassins Creed franchise first debuted. Since its start, we’ve followed the character of Desmond, as he lives through the memories and lives of assassins from centuries before his time.

With the end of the world fast approaching, and our reality quickly catching up to the timeline established in the very first Assassins Creed game, it looks like Desmond’s days are numbered. But as for the AC universe, there may be plenty more games left in this unique franchise.

"In Assassin’s Creed we set up a timeline with this whole end of the world plot of December 2012. That’s fast approaching, and the story we have to tell, we obviously need to do it before we arrive at that point”, said the creative director for the upcoming Assassins Creed: Revelations, Alexandre Amancio.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Amancio explained how the idea of cycles was set to conclude the stories of certain characters, but not for the entire franchise. "We have the Ezio cycle and the Altair cycle, and both of those are set to conclude in Revelations, and we have the Desmond cycle, which is set to end on December 2012”.

“But there’s many cycles within the brand, that’s the whole point. History is our playground", Amancio explained. "Assassin’s Creed is all about cycles”. When asked if any future AC games would also be released on an annual basis, much like the previous two have been, Amancio was quick to shoot the idea down.

"Our development approach is changing", he said. "So our cycles aren’t structured the same way, so it gives us a little bit more development time". While it will be sad to finally say goodbye to Ezio and Altaire, the storyline of Assassins Creed does need to come to a solid conclusion.

AC has been building up an epic tale for several years now, and to prolong the inevitable would be a disservice to the fans. We’re all looking forward to eventually taking over as Desmond, skills honed and acquired from his ancestors, as we finally take the fight to Abstergo, and conclude this long cycle, only to start a new one some time in the future.
