Destiny is coming in September. Those of you who’ve played the alpha and want more, or those who’ve yet to experience Bungie’s big new thing, are waiting patiently for the game’s beta, which kicks off this month. We’ve known when it’ll start on PlayStation platforms, but nothing on when the beta would go live for Xbox owners. Now we know everything. EVERYTHING! Including details on the game’s incoming collector’s editions.

According to a press release from Activision, here’s how the beta’s going to run.

  • The Beta begins first for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 at 10:00am PDT on July 17
  • The Beta begins for Xbox One and Xbox 360 at 10:00am PDT on July 23
  • The Beta will be offline for scheduled maintenance on July 21 – July 22 and open back up to pre-order participants across all platforms until 11:59pm PDT on July 27

The game will also see not just one, but two collector’s editions. Each has a fancier bundle of the game, but the more expensive Ghost edition is something quite special.

The Limited Edition ($99) contains:

  • Limited edition SteelBook Case and Game Disc
  • Guardian Folio, which includes Arms & Armament Field Guide, postcards from the Golden Age and an antique Star Chart
  • Collector’s Edition Digital Content Pack, which includes unique Ghost casing, exclusive player emblem, exclusive player ship variant
  • Destiny Expansion Pass, which includes access to two expansion coming post-launch

Destiny-Ghost-edition

The Ghost Edition ($149) will come with the following:

  • Ghost replica, featuring motion-activated lights and voice recordings from award-winning actor Peter Dinklage, voice of the Ghost character, the player’s personal companion in the game
  • Letter of Introduction
  • Golden Age Relics, which include a Photo, Patch, Sticker and two Chrome slides of the Traveler

The game will, as is usual not just for MMO’s but for all bloody games these days, be subject to a wealth of post-launch expansions. They’ll feature story missions, co-op activities and multiplayer maps, along with new weapons, armour and gear. Each pack will set you back $19.99 or a frankly eye-watering, excessive $34.99 for a season expansion pass. The names of the expansions have been revealed, but that’s about it.

  • Expansion I: The Dark Below – set deep beneath the surface of the Moon, discover an ancient tomb that has been unsealed, and a dark god who has risen an evil army in the depths of the Hellmouth, the home of the Hive enemy race
  • Expansion II: House of Wolves – details will be revealed later
  • PlayStation platforms will also include additional exclusive content for Expansion I and II and will remain exclusive until at least Fall of 2015

Here’s the games latest trailer, detailing the upcoming beta. Remember, pre-ordering the game from select retailers or your digital storefronts will secure you access. I enjoyed the alpha far more than I ever imagined I would, and I’m rather keen to get back to being a guardian.

When the PC corporation pays for part of the development then it will come to PC….oh wait PC’s are owned by individuals, so never.

And if a ton of people buy it, that’ll be the price in the next round – they want this thing around for 10 years.

It’s not an SP game. It’s an MMO, DLC will be important.

True dat…..But usually it’s not called DLC. Either it’s an update (Like FF XIV’s update going live today with MASSIVE content) or a whole new expansion like Kung fun Pandas in the Mist…..Which is why I don’t think it’s that pivotal to the main story/game, I mean, it’s not even out yet. Just seems like extra missions

            July 8, 2014 at 08:10

Well they need to make cash for the new content somehow, so it’s either monthly subs or pay per DLC I guess

          • Umar Reborn XIV

            July 8, 2014 at 08:12

True, they could however, quickly change it to be P2Play as they did with the original FF XIV

Look at the advert – it’s called an expansion pass & includes expansion 1 & 2. Looks like they’re trying to pass off DLC as an expansion now. Welcome to the future. 🙁

I don’t understand why you need a pre-order to get into the Beta. Isn’t the beta like a demo these days to show off the game? Then why isn’t this open to more people? I’d love to see what this game is all about, but i hate (physical) pre-orders. I hope we can pre-order soon on Xbox One, but i doubt the functionality is ready on time

You can always go to their website and try and get a Beta code through there!! That is how I got in to the Alpha, I registered with my game tag and email and they mailed me a code…. Maybe you are lucky!!!

I doubt it , since it’s a digital only edition , who knows may be the text will sparkle.
I am just going for the digital only edition for the cost saving.
