Destiny is adding microtransactions next week

Destiny-Step-Up

Guardian! You’ve scoured the Cosmodrome for Glimmer to spend on upgrades! Survived the Exclusion Zone on Mars in your search for planetary materials. Descended into the Hive depths of hell itself for Radiant parts. Faced the Iron Banner to earn Etheric Light.

Now, your greatest challenge is coming, as the threat of Oryx demands the rarest of currencies: actual money. Real-world coin, which will be used for the greatest of purposes! And that purpose is…DANCE!

Yessir, soon you’ll be able to exchange the Strange Coins you earn from completing the monthly Raid known as your real-world job for actual goods in Destiny, as microtransactions will be offered from October 13.

That’s the word according to Bungie, who say that special requisitions manager Tess Everis will be back at the tower and selling goods from the Eververse Trading Company.

She’ll be offering 18 new emotes, in exchange for a new currency called Silver that can be purchased with cash in either the respective Xbox or PlayStation store.

To kick things off, Bungie said that they’ll provide all Guardians with enough free Silver to “purchase an emote or two and become legend through the power of dance”. Bungie also explained that every emoji was optional:

If you’re not interested in what Tess has to offer, you won’t ever be forced to pluck an item off of her shelf. You’ll still receive updates to the game, and you won’t lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn’t have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped.

Bungie also said that the microtransactions are needed to keep on supporting Destiny. “Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year,” Bungie said.

It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.

I’m torn over this. There’s all manner of debate ready for this, from the idea of asking for more cash for a game with a premium price tag and extra expansions that cost cash, to supporting it in order to keep new content on the way.

Maybe you want to compare it to the traditional MMO subscription model, discuss it being a free online experience that is reliant on Xbox One and PlayStation Network subscriptions. Whatever the case is, I’d need several limbs to spontaneously mutate out of me so that people could ask for the other hand, Darryn.

it is not an MMO in anyway, i wish people would stop saying this is an an MMO, if this is an MMO , than COD, battlefield is an MMO. who would pay actual money to buy something so frivolous?

It is massively multiplayer and also require you to be online all the time. Thus it is an MMO unless your definition is different to mine. What it isn’t is an MMORPG.

That is not the argument you were making. You said it is not an MMO. For it to be an MMO all you need is 100 or more concurrent players on the same shard or server.

BF 64 player so not an MMO.
CoD 32 player so not an MMO.

Destiny … loads of player so definitely an MMO.

on the planets, i think the most i have seen is 8 on one area of a planet, strikes only three, raid only 6, multiplayer is 12, the tower, reef is 16 – 21, not sure i seen anything above 12 anywhere to be honest.

Maybe they cordon all the players with 200ms ping (namely us) off to a separate server? I mostly see names like seekoei, bliksem, or names with ZA or RSA at the end.

It isn’t really about who you see at any time. As far as I am aware most planets are shards by themselves and have the capability of hosting up to 300 players. Raids and Strikes are basically shards that can hold significantly less but still because the planets can hold over 100 persons per shard it is an MMO. WoW servers are also split into shards for instance. Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms/Pandaria etc are all standalone shards as are all dungeon and raids at a significantly lower player count once again.

          • AfricanTime

            October 6, 2015 at 10:27

so if i cannot see the people ? hows it it make it multiplayer?

          • Kromas untamed

            October 6, 2015 at 10:47

Seriously? When you play BF4 and you cannot see that sniper that just killed you it must have been hacks because he did not really exist due to the fact that you did not see him?

If the server holds 2000 players over say a virtual area of 400km2 I can guarantee you that you will not see 1/10th of those players due to things like distance and terrain.

Or are you just trying to troll now?

          • AfricanTime

            October 6, 2015 at 11:01

no sorry, it is a genuine question, you said that the planets can hold up to 300 players, as far as i have seen, i have seen max 8 players in one area, there is about 5 – 6 areas in one planet, no where near 300 players

          • Sageville

            October 6, 2015 at 11:02

Yeah, what @AfricanTime said, hardly ever see more than 12 peeps ever in Destiny.

          • Kromas untamed

            October 6, 2015 at 11:24

There may not be as players usually get cordoned off by latency. However the potential of having 300 players is there even though there might not be in your particular instance.
It is fairly similar to many ea survival games. DayZ for instance is (just barely) classified as an MMO but I have yet to see a full pop 100+ server. In ZA you can barely find a server with 20 people on it even though most of our servers are set for 60odd players.

          • AfricanTime

            October 6, 2015 at 11:29

ok it has the potential to be an MMO, fair enough , but even the American and UK players say the same thing.

          • Kromas untamed

            October 6, 2015 at 11:47

Still the ability to have above 100 players in an area makes it an MMO. The fact that there may not be does not really matter to the definition.

The traditional subscription model still works best in my opinion. The problem is that the standard price for subs have not changed in 20 odd years or so. For instance if FF:ARR cost $7 subs I would still be playing it. At least both WoW and Eve have in game currency sub items even though I still do the traditional sub with them.

The updates will be free and the emotes purchase is just a way to bring in cash. Could be wrong though
