Destiny’s Heroic Strikes are now locked behind DLC

I’ve yet to jump into Destiny head-on. Because right now, I’m playing a waiting game, as I’ve got a R10 bet with Matty that we’ll see a GOTY edition of the game by September 2015 that packs in all the game DLC. That might be a wise move on my part. Because without that DLC which cost the prettiest of pennies, players are going to be locked out of certain in-game content.

So a quick primer: Heroic Strikes and Nightfall strikes are lucrative opportunities for high-level players to earn some true blue loot, Strange Coins and some Ascendant Materials. Gear that players need, in order to make the ghost of Charlton Heston green with envy.

If you were keen on jumping into a strike this week, bad news: Unless you have the new The Dark Below, your potential to do just that has been cut off. Whether this is for launch week only of the new DLC, or if this new idea is going to be the standard for Destiny as it goes forward, is unclear.

Naturally, people are more pissed off than a midget with a yo-yo. Folks over on Reddit and the Bungie’s forums have gone nuclear, expressing their disgust. And they have every right to do so. After all, this is the image you’re being greeted with if you’re looking for a Heroic Strike:

the-dark-below strike

Locking the weekly content behind a paywall? Tsk. It’s an issue that could have easily been rectified, had Bungie inserted a more advanced search option. I genuinely hope that this isn’t a sign of things to come.

Fireteam 1-3 Players – More than welcome to solo it. Good luck tho 😉
      Cooperative – as above
Playstation Plus required – If you arent running plus on your PS4, you are shooting yourself in the foot. Just my opinion
Dark Below DLC requiered – Why are so many people bitching about this? Did you honestly expect any less?

LOL, you forgot to add that you have to, simply must buy Plus on your ps4. I started them new missions last night and that witch / biatch thingy in the strike is a bitch of note. Did manage to get that Murmur Fusion Rifle which is a beast straight out of the box

Good work Obi Wan, good work. How do we get them Commendation thingies for the Vanguards and the strike? Do we have to wait until the Craptarchs girlfriend arrives on Friday?

I’m not sure to be honest. As far as I know you take them to the Vanguard vendors and exchange them for stuffz

While yes, its a dick move for those who dont have the expansion, What better way to showcase the new Strike than have it as the weekly/nightfall? And i would think the backlash from people who have paid for the DLC for not having the new strike showcased would have been more of a slap in the face to the loyal playerbase. If you didnt expect this to happen I’m sorry but you’re a little naive.
As someone with over 100 hours of play, and playing with Lagz guys with up to 400 hours of play in this game, i wouldn’t mind shelling out for the DLC. I’ve got more than my moneys worth of entertainment out of Destiny so far. The only kicker for me is? I bought collectors from the beginning because I knew Bungie would do this.

Every AAA game does this and it can be expensive if you support them all. I’ve only ever bought one season pass and it was for this because it’s a fun game in the end.

Who is paying you to spin everything in a positive light. Paid for DLC and microtransactions is what is ruining AAA games. Stuff how many hours a player puts in. That is no reason to justify screwing the hardcore gamers just becos they enjoy the game. Everything that is wrong with gaming can be seen here. Sad copy & paste marketing article along with paid for commentor bots.

I’m no bot, bud. There are people on Lagz that know how long Ive been around and you are more than welcome to go through my Disqus history to see just how long. I’ve been coming here a LONG time.

Im stating my opinion, as I am entitled to do. While i do agree with your point, DLC is ruining AAA games, My argument isnt about that at all, my argument is entertainment value. This is the world we live in unfortunately, and the infinitesimal spec you are on the corporate radar will change nothing. You can boycott, by all means, but as for me, I invest in what entertains me.

As for the ending of your comment, If you honestly think Lagz put this article up as a “Sad copy & paste marketing article along with paid for commentor bots”… then in my opinion,

        You do not belong here.

Just because you get a new toy doesnt mean we shouldnt be allowed to play with our old one. The one we paid 60 dollars for. Give me 3 examples of Tier 1 games with a 60 dollar tag and an incomplete campaign you have to buy to complete. Content fraud -> buyers denial.

While Diablo 3 is a bad game, you can still access the content you paid for as well as patches without owning Reaper of souls. You just don’t get the expansion pack. Diablo 3 is still playable without Reaper.

Plus Using Diablo 3 as an example is a bad choice since there are no events locked on disc.

Could showcase 2 seperate weekly’s. One for DLCers and 1 for non dlcs. It woulda been the proper thing to do since they already forked over 60+ bucks for the game.

Its pretty disgusting via Destiny. Guess i’m gonna have to put Bungie in the same no buy list I have with Capcom.

Now I don’t know much about Destiny bar hours I put in at launch but surely this makes sense in the world of DLC? In other words, certain missions in most DLC is locked unless you have that DLC? Maybe someone could clarify as I am clearly missing a piece to this puzzle.

IF it is a case of they have now locked stuff away that was available – well that is just crass.

They havnt locked the feature away. The feature in question is the weekly Heroic and Nightfall Strike. This week the Strike in question is from the DLC, so obviously people without the DLC cant run the Nightfall or Heroic.

Well yeah – so all normal for DLC then which we gamers usually hate. OK so this particular week’s Strike happens to be DLC related which I partially understand Bungie/Activision’s move (marketing), but I also sympathise with loyal fan base that doesn’t have the DLC.

Why just not have 2 Strikes?

Ok I was reading a bit further down in the comments. So it’s a weekly feature and this particular one is locked because of DLC content.

While it’s not particularly nice it’s also understandable. They want to market their new DLC and want to entice people to buy. It’s not like strikes are locked away forever for all the people. It’s only when strikes contain DLC content that non owners of said DLC won’t be able to play.

That being said it is a bit of a cheap shot as they should have had 2 separate strikes for this.

Yet, that being said, should they have a weekly strike for every conceivable separate piece of DLC ever released? That’s going to be problematic isn’t it?

Well they can just exclude that strike/raid for players that did not buy the DLC. How hard is it if you click an icon the options you didn’t pay for is disabled or something

I guess but from what I understand it’s a weekly thing so it’s the same for all players? Or am I getting it wrong? If it’s the same for all players then the map, content and weapons would be for whatever the strike is set for.

          • Hammersteyn

            December 10, 2014 at 09:28

You can do the weekly strike anytime, they call it weekly because it rotates every week and you are only rewarded once a week for said strike. I can’t see why they can’t make the old ones available for the people opting out. Now they’re just stuck.

            December 10, 2014 at 10:18

I hear what you are saying and do agree. But I can also see from their side. It becomes even more difficult the more DLC comes out because then they’d need to separate strikes per DLC type as well. It could become very tricky. But to cut people off completely is uncool

This is what I don’t get still. How is Activision even related to Blizzard? Even as separate business units within Blizzard Activision they at least should have some sort of communication. Oh hell … keep them separate. I don’t want Blizzard to start charging monies for content patches!

Well, it’s a Strike that comes from the Dark Below dlc – dlc that is paid for at the moment (as much as some may hate that). Kinda makes sense it will remain ‘locked’ until you’ve unlocked the dlc. But, next week when it cycles, I’m 100% sure that the Strike will be one from the full game and, therefore, back to being unlocked for all.

Agree with the GOTY edition idea, though – that HAS to be in the pipeline for the next year or so (Depending on how long they support Destiny before moving on to Destiny 2.0).
