Destiny’s PlayStation exclusive content is upsetting Xbox fans

Destiny

I wouldn’t blame you for thinking that Destiny is a PlayStation exclusive. Sony has been pushing the game so hard in comparison to Microsoft that it’s an easy mistake to make. Not only that, but the PlayStation version of the game seem to be getting a fair share of exclusive content, and that’s upsetting quite a few people.

Sony had the game on stage at their E3 press conference. On the same day, it was revealed that Destiny would receive a short Alpha, exclusive to the PS4. The Destiny beta starts almost a week earlier on Sony’s consoles. When it’s finally released, Destiny will have content exclusive to PlayStation, including content in future DLC and expansion packages. If you have the choice, you’ll probably want to get Destiny on PS4 or PS3, and that’s what is getting so many people riled up on the Bungie forums.

Before they went multiplatform, Bungie was an Xbox fan’s knight in shining armour. Halo was one of the things Xbox always had over PlayStation, and Bungie really made a name for themselves with the series. It seems like Halo fans are the ones complaining the most about Bungie’s recent love affair with “the enemy”, claiming that the studio is leaving them out in the cold. The official Bungie forums are filled to the brim with angry posts from the Bungie faithful, such as these:

Capture

A few others were extremely offended by the idea of exclusive PlayStation DLC in expansions that cost the same on both platforms.

Capture2

Others were just annoyed that the July Beta would only last 4 days on Xbox, while Sony users get nearly a week extra. That’s on top of the Alpha weekend PS4 players got last month.

Capture3

To be entirely honest, I don’t really understand what the problem is here. Yes, Bungie made a name for themselves on Xbox because they made an excellent franchise that literally sold consoles for Microsoft. They built up a massive fan base, but the fans aren’t the sole reason they are one of the biggest development studios in the industry today. That’s the fruits of their labour, don’t you think?

Besides, it’s not like Activision is taking sides here. When was the last time some Call of Duty DLC came out on a Sony platform first? Microsoft probably poured tons into that deal with Activision, so why is it suddenly so bad that Sony did the same with Destiny?

Thankfully there are more than a few level-headed users on the Bungie forums who are condemning messages like the ones above, with others explaining that the Sony exclusive content is neat, but not all that important. It’s good to see there’s still some logic out there.

Meanwhile people like /u/VoluntaryLiving [-1] get upvoted for calling everyone who’s not happy with it whiny fuckwads while everyone who isn’t gets downvoted.

To clarify. People like me are upset because of the lack of information for anything Xbox related till today, then the year long timed stuff set us off. Then learning that Sony had managed to get timed DLC within DLC (Inception?) plus 4 days to their alpha/Beta days it
fucking sucks. For people like me who love Bungie it hurts a tad more.

      To quote one dude:

“From webster: Alienation: to cause (someone) to feel that she or he no longer belongs in a particular group, society, etc.

Whether you think the reasoning is justified or not does not change the fact that people feel alienated due to these actions.”

Sure we have some people being overly dramatic (me) but telling them to shut up, to shove their opinions to the side, to mock them, to and insult them simply because they wanted equal treatment is just as bad as anyone who goes around screaming about Bungie betraying everyone.

Moving on, nobody on the Xbox was upset when Playstation was included in the community. People were actually happy about it. The issue came from realizing we were being treated as less than equals, not from the lack of being treated as more.

People are not ignoring Microsoft’s past history of timed shit (And don’t bring up GTA IV, Microsoft helped to fund those two expansion packs) but instead have openly complained about the practice, while also complaining about Destinies timed crap. Companies will continue to shit all over us since most peoples lives revolve around defending shitty
practices as is apparent in this sub when people say “it’s just a weapon.” “Or it’s just one year.”

In addition, what pisses of many other people (again me included) is just how unique this whole situation is within Bungie. I’ve been with B.net almost since it’s beginning. It’s always been community focused, Bungie has always been community focused. This deal was done at the expense of the community, it was business focused. Bungie and Acitvision
could have done numerous alternative things to include the PS communitybut instead they choose to let money speak and make the inclusions at the expense of people who have stood by them for a decade or more. They have not responded to angry xbox related posts, they have not responded to calm/levelheaded posts pleading for just ONE response or a picture of the Xbox Controller scheme.

It is expected, that upon learning about this that people would feel discouraged and upset. For that not to happen would mean we were all robots but we aren’t. To call us childish and entitled because we see B.Net and Bungie changing towards PR and business instead of the community we’ve known for a decade hurts. Yes Bungie is out to make money, but their interaction was completely integrated into that. The Halo 3 beta was a prime example of near continuous interaction between community and developer.

Ask most long term b.net users and they will tell you about their focus on their new customers at the expense of their old. I, no we understand WHY they are doing it, but again we’re being snubbed again because of their new customers. I can’t even remember the last time anything Xbox related was done by them. Maybe you consider it childish,
but I cherished seeing urk post in a gamertag thread teasing people for having to find friends.

This change in the direction and the PR talk of their posts is at a complete contradiction to their previous actions where we still felt included even when it was about making money. Now it’s alienating half of their base and people who’ve followed them for a
decade. And we can’t help feeling that way, it’s an involuntary emotional reaction to the changes we are seeing.

You may think we are “whiny entitled little shits” but we complain because we care and because we don’t like what we see. There are lots of American’s who don’t like their countries direction right now but they don’t move to another one, they simply make their voices heard. Some are louder and less helpful and others are quieter and more helpful.
Sometimes it’s vise versa. In the end we just want to be treated equally. We want to become legend with you guys, not a year later when we get the next expansion pack.

Do you believe that we are complaining because we are all entitled shits? Or because we care enough to want to stop them from going down a certain path?

Many of the newer PS members simply don’t understand the connection we have/had with Bungie. I don’t mean to be rude, but they don’t. They weren’t there. We complain because we love Bungie the community more then we love Bungie the Company. And we see it changing. Some people are less eloquent, others are perfectly sane. None of us are wrong for voicing our opinion, we are only wrong in how we say it.

This timed stuff, firing Marty, the loss of key staff, Joe leaving as well as numerous other head guys, the lack of information on the xbox version, the complete lack of interaction with our side of the community…it just worries us. Imagine if all of the sudden a new
destiny sub popped up and the Bungie PR guys only posted there. It’d be the samething, all the memories built up here, all the interactions with them, the jokes, it’d feel wasted because you’re being shoved to to side to make way for the new.

      So we make ourselves heard.

      shrugs

It’s late now. That’s all I’ve got to say and I apologize if it’s as disjointed and rambly and selfish as I feel that it sounds like. Goodnight, I’m sorry for any problems I’ve caused recently with my posts. Long live gaming.

Its just a game – end of the day that’s all it is. Life goes on. Both consoles will have exclusive content.

I love Halo as well and Bungie – but I’m not gonna get upset because they decided to give Sony some exclusivity…. eventually the X1 will get it. It’s not the end of the world.

I’ll buy it for the PS4 or X1 – maybe even both – I have friends that play on both. I have friends that prefer one or the other. I’ll probably wait till the price comes down a tad then decide.

There is no point in being annoyed. Bungie are not a MS studio anymore – and thats that.

        Kind regards

        Geoff.

But isn’t that the same with PS faboys. let say Naughty Dog came out with a brand new Uncharted or Last of Us exclusive to the Xbox or a multiplat with exclusive content for Microsoft. Sony fanboys would shit as much a the Xbox fanboys r for Destiny. Ur calling them fanboy hypocrite but Sony fanboys r just the same.

You don’t have to come up with a scenario, the scenario already exists. Insomniac went multi-plat with Blur, that bombed. They also probably assumed (incorrectly, like EA) that Microsoft would jump out to a lead this gen, and went exclusive with Sunset Overdrive.

The anger did exist with Insomniac for going multi-plat, but I think that helped soften the blow for Sunset Overdrive, because I haven’t seen nearly as much of an issue raised by Sony fans, over it.

However, Microsoft fans who’re hurt by this ‘betrayal’ should probably take a long look at Microsoft themselves. Bungie didn’t just approach Sony and say, yeah we want to make exclusive content for you, fuck those Xbox people.

More likely, Sony worked closely with Bungie on the project (which is logical since we know Bungie had input on the DS4), and they’re even a major focus at their games shows. Such publicity is gold, for a new IP. Microsoft could’ve offered more…they didn’t.

If you XBOX fan boys out there don’t like that you only get 4 days Vs our 11 days for the Beta on the PS4, then buy a PS4 and stop complaining haha

You have no clue what you’re talking about. Nobody expects ms or sony 1st parties to publish multiplatform games. We’re talking about 3rd parties.

Naughty Dog should go multiplat just so ms fanboys stop hating on it.

That’s not the point. We understand why it’s happening, but the complete collapse of the community is very disturbing for any long term fan of Bungie’s works. Enjoy your exclusives, I hope you do. But we don’t have to put up with being neglected by Bungie and we have every right to make ourselves heard.

What do you mean by complete collapse of the community?

A few extra days of beta access and a timed exclusive multiplayer map and the community is “completely collapsing” and ms fanboys having meltdowns left and right?

Doesn’t sound like much of a community.

          • NotMoreZombies

            July 12, 2014 at 17:55

By collapse of the community I mean that bungie.net has ceased to exist as a place for fans to gather and interact with Bungie. Now it’s just a place for Sony elitists to mock Xbox owners for daring to feel that they’ve received the short end of the stick.

No exaggeration. Xbox owners get the same shit there as everywhere else, and Bungie has failed to comment on a number of issues. They’ve said nothing to Xbox owners of the timed exclusives and wouldn’t even show the Xbox control scheme when asked. There’s other issues too, like the firing of Marty O’Donnell, who composed music for Halo and Destiny. They’re just not even explaining why.

I dont get it either Sandy. Its hardly the first time a game has come out with features or content for either xb or ps. If Bungie wants to side with Sony, thats their indaba.

What confuses me though is why they think that its an attack of some sort. Its not vast quantities of items or content either, its a few bonuses here and there from my understanding. What the problem is?

Not certain I understand you spin? Where exactly is the DLC inception? The platorm is getting preference, its the developers decision to do so. Its not a question of anyone getting less its a question of Sony supporters getting more.

You buy a Yaris with aux in or a Corsa of the same value which has bluetooth. Do you shun the car makers for the occlusion or do you pick the car that has features that most appeals to you? Same applies here. They both provide the same purpose, just the one offers a separate set of features which the other doesnt. If a game can be exclusive why cant portions of the game be exclusive? If you dont own a kinect you cant get some features in a number of games. Nobody is crying about that, as its common practice.

IMO fanboys are just butt hurt. Much how PS players felt with the Witcher 2. Cant have your cake AND eat it is what im saying.

Let’s see. After Microsoft paid all that money for timed exclusive DLC for GTA 4. After Microsoft paid for timed exclusive DLC for Call of Duty. After Microsoft DRM’ed the hell out of the Xbox One, yes they flipped the switch but still… I wonder what kind of a person would buy an Xbox One.

Seriously these guys need to grow up! Who cares about timed DLC? Anybody touting this as a “feature” even need to get their shit together!(that’d be you Sony). I HATE how timed and exclusive DLC has become a marketing tool by both MS & Sony and the people are actually falling for it! FFS put some real money into a AAA Exclusive game or at least a couple of new IP’s and then you can market that, not some half assed exclusive or timed DLC!

So Sony gets some timed exclusive I don’t think it is that big of a deal bungie is just trying to establish a Sony fan base Both systems are getting the same stuff just that xbox is timed and there is no release date on the First expansion pack which I’m sure will be next year than a few months after the second will release xbox get the expansion packs the same time Sony does but Sony gets a little extra that’s it and as far as the beta goes it basicly a demo not the complete game it’s just a taste so let’s stop losing your heads about

Click here to sign my petition: https://www.change.org/petitions/bungie-activison-destiny-make-destiny-equal-among-all-4-platforms

You don’t release a multiplatform game and then strip away everything from one side. You need to make it fair to EVERYONE WHO PURCHASES THIS GAME. No I don’t mean get rid of the exclusive content that Sony paid for. I mean don’t make it yearly timed. I’ve never seen a game do that…..ever. A whole year… I can’t even fathom how xbox players think that’s ok. We shouldn’t have to pay the same price for DLC and get less…

Game developers have “partnerships” all the time. Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty, Batman Arkahm Series. None of these games have taken it to the level that Bungie and Activison have.

If you buy the xbox version of this game, you are getting an inferior product. This game will probably be great. But it doesn’t make it any more fair.

Are they listening to us? Have they responded to this outcry of disappointed fans that feel betrayed? Or are they just going to ignore us, hoping this will all blow over. Because that’s exactly what they want to happen.

Join together and help me bring this to the eyes of Bungie and show them how we feel about this.

i really couldnt care less about the whole PS/XBOX is better crap.. but i have an xbox myself and think that it is a little unfair that were getting things later then PS gamers. when a game goes multiplatform i think that should mean that everyone gets treated equally and i dont know if this is correct in saying this but did i read correctly that playstation is getting exclusive DLCs? so does that mean that xbox just wont? i mean that’s a bit unfair tbh :/ not just talking about destiny but for any game out there that is multiplatform.

ive always been a strong believer that companies should just put away this petty competition and work to make something that all gamers love and enjoy.. with all the hate and effort they but into doing exclusives, they could of made many many good ideas that everyone can enjoy. (p.s please no hate! :s)

(correct me if im wrong) but im a playstation guy and i dont think sony or the fans ever complained about titanfall being exclusive to xbox and pc and plus xbox players get cod dlc first (not a cod player, dont like it) I swear most xbox players are greedy fucks that just want to get every game (exclusive or not) on their consoles.

I don’t have a problem with the exclusive part of it as long as a story mission or a multiplayer map is not exclusive to the other (which by the way is the case) my other problem here is that the month wait for call if duty maps i thought was dumb even though i was on the good side of it.. I never considered it a benefit to xbox users.. Just a punishment to playstation users, and that’s not right.

Also, at least the month wait was somewhat reasonable… The wait for xbox users for less content and the same amount of money is a YEAR!

Just going to point out that COD DLC does come out for Sony users but Destiny on the other hand is releasing ONLY Sony DLC plus early DLC whats a bit a ‘stab in the back’ move by Bungie releasing exclusive DLC like Weapons and Armour ONLY for PS3 and 4. The game will still be brilliant but after the past Alpha and Beta of the game its starting to appear that Xbox fans will get nothing apart from main DLC’s expansion packs, and Bungie will just pour hot melting fat all over the PS3 and 4 consoles and leave the Xbox 360 and One all cold and skinny. But im not saying Bungie should drop everything and make it fair due to ‘HALO’ but how that Activision deal with Xbox is not completely one sided, the DLC only gets released earlier for Xbox and PlayStation users still get it but what Bungie is doing is completely slapping Xbox in the face and releasing early DLC for PlayStation PLUS EXCLUSIVE THINGS…Sounds a bit one sided to me.Either way im going to enjoy it.

They should have made exclusive content for both sides and made them different, such as armor and weapons go… I agree that it is messed up that Xbox players helped build Bungie into what they are by the Halo series that was an Xbox exclusive. Bungie isn’t giving anything back to the community of “LOYAL” fans… They are giving all the nice stuff to the “new kids”.

I understand that playstation is getting more but I feel like it is a bad decision to hold out on the Xbox for a year, if ty want to make money they ought to release it before that or no Xbox gamers will buy it. By that point the fan base will have dropped significantly.
