CIV BE preview tech web

Most Civilization games have run along similar courses – you build your first city, expand, explore, grow and eventually take over the world. The tech tree is linear and you know for which end goals you are striving. Civilization: Beyond Earth is a much more nuanced and unique experience, and you may need some help understanding it.

The latest trailer for Civilization: Beyond Earth is almost 10 minutes long and gives a ton of detail:

The video looks at seven elements of the game: the new beginning, planetfall, exploration, affinities, the tech web, advancement and victory. I already told you about a bunch of this stuff in my preview, but it’s certainly nice for fans of the game to see some of the gloriously impressive visuals. Civilization looks better than any of the previous installments in the franchise, and it turns the gameplay completely on its head. I really like all the new mechanics in the game, but it will take some time to get used to.

I wish that they would change some of the exploration and balancing elements – it just feels frustrating that the explorers start with only one expedition module, and the aliens just keep killing them unless you have the right affinity bonus. However, I’m sure it’s all part of the deep strategy and I will just have to learn how to overcome it. Now the game needs to hurry up and launch so that I can sink all the hours into it.

Are you ready for Beyond Earth? Do you think it will be as much of a time sink as Civilization V, or will the complex new mechanics scare away all but the most die hard strategy fans?

If 10 minutes can no longer be called a trailer, then what do you call it?

“The tech tree is linear…”?? That’s a bit harsh. There aren’t multiple ways to get to the same technology, but unless your at the very end of a civ tech tree you are always free to research in different directions. Granted some of the linearity that there is in civ they seem to remove in beyond earth, in the sense that the tech tree is too big (so they say) to complete in one game, so you have to decide which branches to focus on, and there does not seem to be a converging point for all the techs.
