Deus Ex: Mankind Divided gets its first story DLC this month

Now that I’ve kicked my Alienation addiction (maybe!), I’ve started playing some other games again. That’s great, because I’m finally starting to make my way through Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I adored Eidos’ first modern take on the cyberpunk franchise, even though it did have its fair share of issues. The same can be said for its sequel.

I’m engrossed in its futuristic, divided European setting, and I’ve been spending more time hacking computers and reading emails than actually doing missions. When I’m not dealing in subterfuge, I’m soaking up the incredible world design. It makes a few narrative mistakes, sure, and it treats its very heavy themes without the respect they rightfully deserve. If it’s holding up a mirror to society as it is now, it’s providing just a fleeting glimpse.

Still, it’s very much a game worth playing. And it’s getting more content. Love it or hate it, but season passes and paid expansions are here to stay, and are naturally part of a game that’s so rife with extraneous purchasing options.

The first bit of new content is called System Rift, and it reunites the gravelly, monotone Adam Jensen with the sarcastic, sardonic Frank Pritchard.

“In System Rift you will re-unite with Frank Pritchard, Adam’s friend and former colleague at Sarif Industries, and assist him in hunting down information on the mysterious Santeau Group,” says the press release.

“Desperate to get more information, Pritchard targets one of the most secure data banks ever created–the Palisade Blade. In agreeing to help, Adam may also be able to uncover hints as to who the illuminati really are.”

It’s coming to PC, Xbox On and PlayStation 4 on September 23. It’ll be followed up with a second story DLC called “A Criminal Past” I 2017. Both story add-ons are part of the game’s system pass, and will be available separately too.

Here’s what we said of the game in our review:

“Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is still a Deus Ex game through and through, even if it doesn’t always manage to hit the same highs as its predecessor. But for all its faults, its numerous other triumphs made it utterly compelling to play through until the end.”

You know, I walked into a store this weekend. I have some funds available, making a game purchase quite very possible.
But a R900.00 price tag just killed it. I love games, but if I consider what else I can do with that money in and around the house, or pay off towards debt?
Man! I’ve become an ADULT! (In some aspects. Not all…)

I came to that realisation a few months ago, when I saw Dark Souls 3 retailing for R1k at a shop… The problem being that games have always been relatively cheap, but in about 3 to 4 years they’ve literally doubled in price and shamelessly so…

Sad….and not sad….. Me too. Surely. Started a few years back. Wife said, let us buy a house. I was very happy living in a Granny Flat (with a dining room, lounge in separate rooms, of course) but she said it, so we bought a house.

Best thing ever. Worst thing ever. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times….. I had to grow up very quickly, things break, expensive things. Plumbing leaking in walls, for example, leads to all new tiles for entire bathroom.

        AND – Good on you!

Consider this: if you buy 1 NEW pricey game every six months, buy from CNA, and use Edgars card with no interest, pay off in six months. Is an option. Card with interest? GITS I bought my Xbox One from CNA. Could have paid cash for it, did not, kept cash on hand for emergencies and what not. Was not needed. What if it was?

Tl:dr Cool, we are all growing up. Sad, but not sad. Try CNA account, NO INTEREST.

Oh no. Sadly when it comes to CNA accounts I am the devil! I end up with an installment the size of my ego!
Right now, I can afford about R500.00 cash per month for games. Considering I have a PS4, PS3 and PC I can find a LOT of games at that price.

      #staystrong and all that stuff.

Still play Xcom 2 Long war stuffies? Or past that? Is coming out for Xbox One, sort of considering it. Sort of. First one, I got bored with missions quite quickly.

Funny thing, I replayed XCOM EU a few times, EW quite a lot, but only once through XCOM2….

        Maybe will try again soon

hmm, interesting. Perhaps not an immediate (not that I have the time, newborn baby, work, toddler) purchase then.

Nostalgia, for me, still the driver for these games. The feelings in 199X when I played the FIRST one, was, just, well, wow.

Wait wait wait. Tell me. Do we hate this dev now for having paid for DLC ready for a game a week or two or three or four after its release?
It is so hard to keep up with who/what we hate and love…

I don’t think I hate any devs for having proper DLC. It’s a necessary evil that’s keeping the industry running. I do think ARK’s DLC is a bit of a cheek seeing as the game isnt even out of Early Access.

Back in the day, games were made on a much smaller budget. Theindustry has become a sort of self-devouring monster really., an ouroboros. Games have t be these big, blockbuster games or people complain, but those games cost tens of millions (and sometimes hundreds of millions) to make and market. That money needs to come from somewhere (along, of course, with keeping shareholders happy and profits etc etc). A game that cost $1M to make 15 years ago, would see costs of ten, twenty times that now.

And, in the regions that matter, games haven;t gone up in price in decades. In fact, they’ve come down. Where cartridge based games on the SNES, N64 used to cost $100, since the CD era (PlayStation 1, Dreamcast ect) AAA retail games have been stuck at the $60 price.

Of coyrse, that’s different for SA because our cirrency and costs are tied to what’s happening in other regions – so we’ve seen games go from R500 to R1000 in what seems like no time. For much of the rest of the world games haven’;t changed in price – so publishers are increasing their selling price through DLC.

Yeah, I don’t mid dlc all that much. Just been around long enough to notice the dramatic change in the way the games industry does business. Also, Being credit card averse does not help matters much…..

Yes and no actually. This “paid for” DLC is a bit fast on it’s way out in my “personal” opinion, but this developer is not asking for hundreds of Rands for DLC since you can buy the game and season pass for R750 which is a fair price coming from a known developer and AAA franchise.

Or R1249 on Xbox One. Probably similar on Playstation. They can get knotted. Paid my R899 (cough, cough) for it.

I can say, judging from my part -progress, I will replay this game several times over next year or two. that considered, is still EXCELLENT value for money.

Stupidly high. BUT the game worked without a single bug or driver update required.

Except the one I reported on Square enix forums….. BUT the game did “auto correct” itself after the mission (I was in no weapons mode DURING a mission, could not take-down or fire weapons)

Mine runs on perfectly on pc. No driver updates required, no crashes, no bugs. Nothing. R499 for a pre-order is a steal for me. Pity about the MTs, but that’s Squeenix being douches, not Eidos.
The game is good fun, but it’s far from perfect though.

Yeah, just teasing a bit. Yes, HR had more soul and feeling, so far. Not that MK is bad…

I think mine runs well thanks to having an AMD, many Nvidia gamers are having problems, I see.
Mankind Divided has that atmosphere that the first Deus Ex had (just not dark), but the NPCs are lifeless and you easily feel detached from what is supposed to be a very emotional atmosphere.

Looking forward to more and more. Not even half way (I think) and it is awesome. I like the symbolism in the game, I find it quite clever.

DLC, if same calibre as side missions and a bit longer, will be welcomed. If priced right. And bought next year as part of the inevitable GOTY edition (even if no outlet actually votes this game of the year).

Anyway, point is, well realised universe, nice-ish characters (vendors a bit better than previous game, but not by much)

Yeah, Considering the lofty price tag for games these days, All the stuff I would usually ignore becomes a serious problem and Deus Ex has a few that can’t be ignored. The bad voice acting, The cheap motion capture, The lack of meat and oomph in gun fights. The weird disparity in graphics fidelity. It’s like they drank a bunch of Red Bull on the day they built the map with the ARC headquarters but were lethargic the rest of the time. The story is a incoherent mess that is hard to follow when you consider the countless terminals you hack and all the E-books you have to read. If any of you have not bought this yet and you are on console, wait until you can get it for way cheaper. It’s not triple a in any way whatsoever. Also, Avoid a racing game called Asseto Corsa. I wasted R 800 on it this weekend and I can’t exactly take it back. Huge fucking rip off.

I’m actually quite surprised that not more people are complaining about the bad voice acting and terrible facial animations that often completely desync (or it’s just so bad that it doesn’t match what they’re saying).
Don’t forget the unnecessarily long loading times.
I bought Assetto Corsa on Steam, refunded it after an hour. Graphically and handling-wise, it’s pure racing bliss, but it’s very limited in content and options.

Yeah, Deus Ex is a sub par attempt if you consider some of the other titles that have been released in recent months. I found Asseto Corsa looks very cheap and nasty if you compare it to the likes of Project Cars and Forza. Also, While the racing is probably ok, I found it exceptionally hollow and soulless.

Yea, that’s probably true about AC, I don’t think I spent enough time before I refunded it. But the fact that control keys couldn’t be changed was an instant refund for me, as it made it unplayable with my different preferences.

I know to compare Deus Ex with Witcher is wrong, but just consider that you’re loading a level a quarter the size of Novigrad, with less detail too, and it takes three times longer than it does to load Velen in Witcher 3. The animations is the big let-down for me though.

You have every right to compare Deus Ex to the Witcher. The Witcher was a incredible experience with a vast world that held up in every aspect. Deus Ex was so friggen weak in comparison. I would even say that Fallout ( with all it’s lackluster graphics and game-play ) was vastly superior to Deus Ex. When you are paying premium price for a game, Your opinion matters.

            September 5, 2016 at 10:21

I agree. Fallout 4 is superior and the animations are only slightly less detailed than that of Deus Ex. But Fallout 4 is about freedom, content and exploration, and that’s why it’s more acceptable in its case.

I’m not really going to bother with DLC on this game. It’s not the type of game I’ll go back to once I’m done. The first game still had great replayability.
