Developer suggests pulling advertising over bad reviews

TheOrder1886.jpg

The gaming community had very high expectations for the PlayStation 4 exclusive Steampunk extravaganza, The Order: 1886. Unfortunately the game hasn’t lived up to expectations with a current Metacritic average of 65/100.

Our own review wasn’t even that kind giving the game a rather poor 5.5/10. The main problem being that the game was boring, which is a cardinal sin in the videogame industry.

Many complaints were also put forward about the game’s short length, no replay value and lack of any real essence apart from how amazingly beautiful the game is. Having said all of that I’ve still put my order in for The Order: 1886 as the idea that this is the best looking console game ever made is something I need to see for myself.

However these low scores have upset some people. Dean Rymer who works at Santa Monica Studios – one of the studios that’s credited alongside Ready at Dawn for The Order –  has gone to twitter to vent.

Before you explode, Dean Rymer has no say in the advertising, marketing or retail strategy of the game and this is obviously his personal feelings about the issue. These tweets have subsequently been deleted. Personally I have no issue with Dean airing his mind, he’s part of the team that made the game and it’s his baby. An ugly, boring and less than useful baby but his baby none the less and he will feel upset that we hate it so.

Taking a look through the Metacritic scores and you start to realise that this game has polarised opinion vastly. There are scores as ludicrously high as 95 from Gamingtrend and as ridiculously low as 20 from Digital Trends.

And this is really why gaming publishers send out review copies to get a consensus across the board. To allow a consumer, such as yourself, to decide for yourself whether a game is worth buying or not.

The second part is obviously advertising and as you can see we are currently advertising The Order: 1886 but as with all decent websites our advertising and editorial are miles apart and advertising spend has no say in the score a game will receive. Pulling advertising after a bad score will though result in an awesome and highly volatile article about that fact which is pretty much why it never happens anywhere in the world. Nothing kills a brand more than a petulant move like that.

If it makes him feel better, I like his baby more than I like actual babies. The idea of it anyway, I haven’t played it.

But his tweets are indicative of what RoD’s people were saying last week about games media “hating” their game; and a widespread idea with many other devs & pubs that’s become popular lately. You created something, that’s great. BUT. That doesn’t mean it’s good, or even if it’s good people will like it, and more importantly that it’s somehow immune from fair criticism. You’re not special snowflakes. I think the games industry has to shoulder a lot of the blame when it comes to the overall negative perception, people tired of over-hyped, under-delivering or just plain broken games, that are also not cheap.

This will come with the future DLC that was ripped from the game that in turn created huge plot holes.

Also waiting for the REMOVE BORDERS update.

This game proof why people don’t trust scores anymore, to many different opinions with different scores. If you had a scoring system that was transparent the game will not get a 5.5 score even if you felt the game was boring. Graphically, sound acting etc is above the rest. The game is definitely not a 5.5 but also not an 8 or 9. the true score is between 6.5 and 7 and the metacritic scores proof that yet again.

I dunno. I like to use a full 10 scale when reviewing games – so a fix is actually a little above average. The Order might look amazing (and it does) but it’s really just an okay game.

Maybe I’m old school, but pretty does not always a good game make. Fun is what makes a good game. The Order seems to have zero fun. Hence low scores are justified…

Fun is important but two persons perception of fun is different. That is why you need a transparent scale so that fun alone is not the only thing that make up your score

Well there is 69 reviews on the metacritic site ranging from 95 to 20. that is just to much of a difference in opinion. Now go and look at the scores for evolve. Reviewers love it the public hated it 7,7 for reviewers vs 4.4 for customers.

“We are influence by review scores because we can’t affort all the games”

Speak for yourself I can work out if a game is worth it from gameplay videos alone, then I use review scores and articles to confirm/debunc my suspicions …

Its not rocket science, but in the age of google everyone wants to be spoonfed …

You can always pirate it and buy the game if you like it. I usually do it with games I am unsure about.

Otherwise why dont we get all the game reviers in the world together once a year to agree on game scores for the coming year. Then when the game comes out everyone’s got a 7 rating to make sure they dont confuse you.

Agreed. I hate it when people say “Oh but Reviewer A said it sucks therefore it must suck”. Fuck that, rent the game, play it for yourself if you’re worried, but don’t just quote some asshole retard as some authority when they’re really just an empty head with a pen.

I agree. You shouldn’t judge a game until you personally have experienced it. But generally reviews help me decide whether I’ll be interested or not. I got to play some of The Order at rAge last year. I knew immediately it’s not for me. I wasn’t impressed with the game at all. And with Geoff’s review of his experience I know it’s definitely not for me. If I was to review this game it would probably be around the same score as Geoff’s.

Look, if The Order does it for you, I am happy. I would rather sit and play a game like Mass Effect for the 7th time than pay R900.00 for a game that seems to be short, and not a lot of fun to play.

With that I agree, Mass effect to this day remains the game I most replayed in my life (except mass3) yet we easily pay R70 for a movie ticket (excluding snacks) for a 2 hour experience that’s non interactive. I get it that cost/time spent = value but sadly its not always a valid calculation to make. personally im already at 9 ours in the Order and love every second so currently I am at R100 per hour with 5 chapters yet to complete

People don’t trust score because they want to be fed what they like. Scores are scores, and as a consumer you should know what you what, with scores to help you out making that decision. GTA V is one of the highest rated games, but I don’t like it, AT ALL, so I won’t buy it. It’s time gamers stop blaming games media and they start being smarter consumers.

Such a shame. I agree the game is not a 6 and definitely not anything lower than an 8. Its not boring is tense and such a great story, its beautiful and fun. If short is a problem take a look at game of the year Journey, only 4 hours long? it would be a sad day to see yet another developer go under due to low review scores for a game that’s quite brilliant, I hope it keeps selling well since I would rather play a new interesting game with a great story than yet another yearly installment of EA or Ubisoft. In the end I guess its all about sales and if we keep buying re-skinned renditions of games and don’t support innovative developers as well as creative Independent developers we should not complain when all we have to play in a couple of years are FIFA, COD Farcry and Assassins creed.

The bad score is a reflection of the reviewers taking Value for money into account.

If the game was R399 I guarantee this would be sitting in the 8.5s.

BUT NOOOOoooooo They just slap R899 on the game cause they can.

Imagine if LIMBO sold for R699?

Whats brilliant about it you harp on all the time about how great it is but you fail to specify why its great.

I am curious what makes it so great ?

“Its not boring is tense and such a great story, its beautiful and fun.” sounds like a pretty formulated response.

Is the story amazing? because from what I have been hearing is that it leaves the player frustrated by totally ignoring the cool bits, and that the ending wants to make you throw the controller at the TV.

Just as you get into it, they rip you out. Obviously carrot on a stick work model where the DLC was decided before closing the plot holes.

What about game play. There is a shit hot weapon that has never been seen before but they only allow you to use it 4 times.

As a PS4 owner I would rather dust off my Gears of War trilogy. I want gameplay.

The same with the witcher, the expectations is so high that most reviewers will scrutinise it in the finest detail. Because the scoring is not transparent they will judge it on things that was overlooked with other games.

I could name a few but Resogun alone covers it. Truth be told, I hardly turn on my XB1 unless I feel the need for a Fifa or Forza fix. The biggest problem is the Games with Gold offerings being rubbish for the most part when compared to brilliant indie titles that PS+ have on offer every month. My opinion.

Don’t care if he’s just “airing” his thoughts, if you’re going to be a little bitch about the fact that your game failed doesn’t that just make you a sore loser? Do you think any other industries failures are coupled with whiney moany little brats I’m fairly sure civilisation would exist as a whole. So some people dont like your game, why be a poes about it and ignore the ones who did enjoy it? Gavin’s managed to find a site that was willing to give it 95, so do they get their advertising revoked? Must they stop getting review copies? Or is it only the publications that didn’t give you a high score?

Sounds a little like extortion to me. Thankfully he’s got fuck all to do with it. Little bitch.
