Early Access programs have generally been exclusive to the Pc platform, but earlier this week, Geoff reported how Sony have been contemplating adding Early Access to the PS4. Apparently, ID@Xbox developers have been requesting the same, meaning Xbox could be implementing the program at some point too.
In an interview with Develop, Chris Charla, the director of ID@Xbox , spoke about how Early Access is now a talking point at Xbox too.
It’s something developers have been asking for, and we are listening really closely to developers, but I don’t have anything to announce on that right now.
As Geoff pointed out, for every great Early Access game, there are at least a dozen more that fail or just drop off the radar completely. Xbox would like to avoid the same sort of issues if they decide to launch any sort of program.
It’s a really interesting issue with digital marketplaces, and it’s something our store and marketplace team think about all the time. There’s a lot of heavy deep thinkers, experts, PhDs working on these problems at Xbox every day – not just for the Xbox store, but for Windows Store and Windows Phone. Our goal is to have a rational marketplace, where good games are visible and sell well.
It certainly is a problem for gamers. If you see a game that grabs your interest, how do you know that you are not potentially throwing money away because the developers are not equipped to see the project through to release or they run into some other problems along the way? It will be interesting to see just how the Playstation and Xbox manage Early Access, assuming they implement that sort of program in the near future.

Agreed. It makes sense for the little guy that needs the funds to continue and there should be some kind of rules and conditions regarding being able to do early access. I can just see people like EA and Ubisoft going overboard with this
