DGL: registrations extended, DOTA 2 smashes SA records

Record breaking

Gotta love gamers – we told you back in December that you could register for the DGL. So, what does everyone do? Wait until the last minute, of course! It’s okay, the DGL has extended registrations for all you procrastinators.

That’s right, registrations for the DGL has been extended to 26 January 2014 – but that doesn’t mean that you should procrastinate any further. This DGL looks to be yet another record breaker, this time smashing South African tournament entry records. Dota 2 is the main source of registrations, and it’s huge:

The 2014 Telkom DGL Dota 2 Summer Leg has thus far received 234 teams entered into the Dota 2 DGL. Not only is this a first for the DGL once again, but never has a competition in South Africa seen this many entries.

But wait, there’s more. Hearthstone is making its debut at the DGL, and it has certainly arrived with a bang. It has blown more established titans like COD and Battlefield out of the water; it has already broken the 200 entry mark, managing 236 registrations in its first year at the DGL. Anyone still have any doubts if it will be a success on the eSports scene?

Oh, and let’s not forget the biggest MOBA in the world, League of Legends. It is entering its second year at the DGL and has broken the 100 teams mark. Can you believe it – over 100 teams have entered; with five players per team, that’s 500 players just playing League of Legends. Exciting stuff – I have a feeling we will be seeing an even higher caliber of players this year. I wonder if last year’s champions can keep their titles, or if they’ll be bested by a new generation of great players. Will the big names sweep the championships, or will some unknown teams make names for themselves?

Hearthstone is not an esport. It’s a virtual card game.
