Diablo 3’s latest patch adds Ancient Items

Diablo patch

You know, I honestly have no idea how to segue into a story about a new Diablo 3 patch. So I’m just going to start yammering about incremental changes and new features being added to the game. That totally counts, I reckon.

So what’s on the cards? The big new addition this year happens to be in the form of Ancient Items, which might also describe any of your grandparents that you had dumped in a retirement village. Ancient Items are essentially even rarer than Legendary gear, and drop from slain enemies in the Torment I or higher difficulty modes. Here’s the full list of how special Ancient Items from Blizzard:

  • Ancient items are more powerful versions of Legendary items
  • Ancient items roll from increased value ranges for certain affixes
  • Ancient Mojos, Orbs, and Shields roll with increased Damage or Shield Block values
  • Ancient items can now drop at Torment I or higher
    • The drop chance will increase with each Torment level
  • Any Legendary or Set item has a chance to be dropped or crafted as an Ancient item
  • Legendary or Set items purchased from Kadala have a chance to be an Ancient item

There’s a ton more in the patch notes in this link for PC or console. There’s also a slew of new Treasure Goblins, according to Blizzard:

  • New Treasure Goblins have been added to the game! Be on the lookout for the Gem Hoarder, Blood Thief, Odious Collector, and Malevolent Tormentor. These additions to our growing goblin family can only be found in Adventure Mode.
  • All Treasure Goblins now appear standing next to a portal and have been given a special mini-map icon in order to increase their visibility.

Various bugs are once again being fixed, crafting materials and gems now have an increased stack size to 5000 and characters have been tweaked once again. The Demon Hunter for instance, now features an update that encourages players to make better use of the agility and mobility of the character, while Monks have been altered to do something that I genuinely don’t understand. I call this the Pokémon effect.

  1. This patch bloody nerfed my monk again by changing Monkey King Garbs effects.

You know what I hate / find funny?

When they make possitive changes to legendary items (Make them stronger) they always say they can’t do it for existing items because the stats are already set and you’ll have to go looking for the improved items.

But let them nerf an item and they can suddenly do it actively on all items already dropped by players in game.
Heck in this case they didn’t just make a small change they completely changed the way the entire set works together!!!
    FOOKING HALL!!!!

Actually I worked it out, I do 5000% less damage over 250 spirit used than before the patch

I just see it as opening up new play styles.

Got bored with only 3 working builds per class.

It doesn’t open new play styles. New play styles would be to introduce new items to make people want to try other builds. Not force previous builds out.

Now the way I wanted to play is completely nonviable. Yet they claim that they want many differant playstyles yet every change doesn’t increase the play styles, just cycles different ones. The amount viable hasn’t changed.

Monkey King’s Garb used to have a set bonus that said “Combat Staffs do 20% more damage” This made 2 handed play exceptionally viable with almost ANY 2 handed combat staff.

Monkey King’s has now removed that (So there’s 20% constant damage gone) and made it that you have to use specific skills to activate its decoy clone (Which only explodes for 1000% damage instead of the 2000% odd it was before). That’s limiting. Before it was for every 75 spirit spent. Which meant I could use any staff with any spirit spending skill to proc the damage.

Now I have to use specific skills and the only 2handed staff that’s viable is now the Incense Torch which reduces the cost of Wave of Light by 40 – 50%. So Now, instead of using any spirit spend skill I will have to use 1 type of Diabo to reduce Wave of Light’s spirit cost to be able to spam the decoy so that I can do damage.

Sorry, I’m a bit miffed. Why couldn’t they just include a new set to focus around the skills of Wave of Light, Exploding Palm and Cyclone strike? There was no need to nerf and completely change Monkey King’s 🙁

Haven’t done any as Monk, But just looking through the DH I can see a lot of trimming I need to do, but now I also have some more cold skills for buff.

          • Raptor Rants A Lot

            January 15, 2015 at 12:44

You see for Monk they didn’t change skills at all. They literally just changed Monkey King’s.

This is the entirity of Monk changes:

            Monk
            Active Skills, Epiphany
            Bug Fixes
Fixed an issue that could sometimes cause players to get stuck on a wall when teleporting with Epiphany

            Monk

            Monkey King’s Garb
            Has been redesigned

            (2) Set Bonus

Casting Cyclone Strike, Exploding Palm, Lashing Tail Kick, Tempest Rush, or Wave of Light causes a decoy to spawn that taunts nearby enemies and then explodes for 1000% weapon damage

Decoy explosion now deals the damage type of your highest +% Elemental Damage

            (4) Set Bonus

When your decoys explode, you gain a buff that increases the damage of Cyclone Strike, Exploding Palm, Lashing Tail Kick, Tempest Rush, and Wave of Light by 500% for 3 seconds Enemies hit by the decoy explosion take 500% more damage from your Cyclone Strike, Exploding Palm, Lashing Tail Kick, Tempest Rush, and Wave of Light abilities for 3 seconds

The worst? The 4 set bonus doesn’t even seem to be working at the moment

Also remember, this went through over a month on PTR, and there weren’t all that many game breaking complaints.

I’m certainly complaining about it and there were a lot of people who were upset that monkey king is now less viable than other sets simply because it was the only set that helped 2hander Diabo users. That benefit is now gone and 2handers are again on the low end of the damage scale

          • Lord Chaos

            January 15, 2015 at 13:13

Same with the DH Marauder set. Just means I finally have to start thinking of how to play again, instead of plonking down 5 turrets and running in circles like a headless chicken.

          • Raptor Rants A Lot

            January 15, 2015 at 13:18

That’s just the thing. Monkey King you had to think. You had to maintain your spirit usage and know when you would be spending the 75spirit mark. You could ramp up your damage with carefully used mixes of spirit spenders.

Now it’s just “Make Wave of light as cheap as possible. Spam it”

            🙁

Lol no. The total amount of bonus damage (after base damage) over 250 spirit for me was 10000%

It’s now only 5000% extra damage over base damage over 250 spirit spent

            January 15, 2015 at 13:06

            January 15, 2015 at 13:14

            so, 50% less damage then. since it’s halved… ;P

            January 15, 2015 at 13:16

well, yes I guess you can look at it that way. But I like to do the numbers from how much larger they are than base damage. Sounds more impressive!

          • Gideon Venter

            January 15, 2015 at 13:18

Yes, exaggerated lies always sound more impressive…

            But it’s wrong!

            January 15, 2015 at 13:20

It’s not wrong 🙂 Diablo stats are all set on the principle of how much more damage you are doing than your base. Skills indicate 500% extra here or 2600% extra there.

So if they take a skill from 2000% damage to 1000% damage, it’s either 50% less in the overall picture or 1000% less bonus skill damage. Both are correct. Not lies 😉

          • Gideon Venter

            January 15, 2015 at 13:32

That’s… certainly an interesting way of looking at it.

Sure, if you qualify your statements, you could make yourself understood, even though you’d be factually incorrect.

the thing with percentages is they don’t work the same both ways.
            e.g.

            100 + 10% = 110
            110 – 10% = 99

            or more complicated:

            100 + 10000% = 10100
            100 + 5000% = 5100
            However
            10100 – 5000% = 0

            January 15, 2015 at 13:36

            *lesigh*

I am not talking about what the numbers would be. Man you can be so nitty gritty about your numbers. You never change 🙂 Ever since I’ve known you 🙂

At the end of the day actual bonus damage done for my Monk has been halved (50%) but if I had to write down a descriptive text for all my bonus damage as if it was one skill my skill would be like this:

Prepatch “This awesome epic skill of Llew does 10000% bonus damage”
Postpatch “This awesome epic skill of Llew does 5000% bonus damage”

The damage multiplier is down from 10000% to 5000% while actual damage done has effectively been reduced by 50%. Or halved.
I was referring strictly to percentages as a representation / description and not the actual effect of said percentage changes

In PayDay 2 they recently had a new update which reset your skill points. Which is fine, only problem is that they only reimburse you with 100 skill points, not the 100+ you had before.
Pissed me off so much. I don’t understand why companies do this? Is it too much effort to spent a little more time on getting it right?
