Diablo Immortal is shaping up to be a chunky alternative to the usual demon-slaying action of its bigger brothers on PC and console. It may play out on a smaller screen, but mechanically it features a highlight reel of some of the most treasured classes that fans have played as over the year. From stalwart bruisers such as the Barbarian to new generation ass-kickers such as the Demon Slayer and Monk, Diablo Immortal has a healthy selection of classes to choose from.
So which characters made the cut for Blizzard? The devil-killers who brought a strong sense of identity to Diablo over the years, according to senior system designer Kristopher Zierhut. “The most important thing about classes is that they all have really strong and unique identities,” Zierhut explained.
They have abilities and playstyles that feel very different from each other, and when you’re playing as that class you feel like you’re that type of a character. So we talk about Barbarians leaping into combat in a battle rage and striking everything around them. Does it fit our game? Does it fit our world? Is it distinct from the other classes?
We talk about about the demon hunter being able to shoot while moving, the wizard using their magic to freeze and control monsters or blow them up with fire. Getting those important fantasies to feel right is the most important thing. As we looked at classes to add to the game, we’re looking at how strong a fantasy and an idea of being that character, can be provided.
