Did a physical delay boost Dying Light digital sales?

Some people talk about the importance of digital sales while others actually act upon it. Thanks to the good people at SuperData, we can look forward to monthly information about digital console sales for games. Just how big is the digital market and which games are on top? Wonder no longer.

Without any ado, here are the top ten digital console titles by worldwide revenue for January 2015:

  • Grand Theft Auto V: $31.8 million
  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: $23.5 million
  • Destiny: $14.2 million
  • Dying Light: $12.0 million
  • Battlefield 4: $11.7 million
  • Resident Evil HD Remaster: $10.8 million
  • Minecraft: $10.3 million
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts: $9.2 million
  • Madden NFL15: $6.1 million
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops II: $3.5 million

Despite only releasing on new generation consoles, Dying Light did pretty well. Could this also be attributed to the delay for physical release – did most people cave and go digital instead? It’s amazing to see just how much digital money last year’s games are still raking in. GTA V, COD and Destiny are making mega bucks thanks to the ever-green nature of digital. It’s interesting to see that even AAA games benefit from this aspect of digital; indies and AAA games alike would have long been pushed into the bargain bin level of income if not for digital extending the profitability tail.

It’s great to finally have a clear picture of the digital market and I’m very curious to see how the February releases shake up this ranking. Will Evolve have a massive and long-tailed impact, or will the titles on the list be the status quo? I still find it hard to accept how many games I own that are intangible.

Is this going to be our future? Physical copies get delayed to artificially boost digital sales? Fortunately, the love for a disk is far too strong with me.

digital still too expensive here, paying in dollars and the downloads too heavy.

Its only more expensive thanks to our lovely exchange rate. If we were back to like R8 or lower, it would be so much easier to just buy, preload and play the game on launch day. Me personally am over having the dvd, don’t see the point anymore.

the exchange is pretty shit, but realistically, thats not going to change any time soon, I remember the days of R7 to the dollar, but bringing them up all the time just makes it harder to swallow, we havent had R8 to the dollar since 2012.

hard copies at R450 work out to 40$ while digital copies at 60$ work out to near R700, we’re paying 1/3rd more for an imaginary copy of the game.

even worse is the price we pay for hardware.
330$ for the nvidia 970 which is like R3800, but the cheapest we get here is R4800. How does one justify R1000 increase?
