Did EA and Spielberg’s game get totally Sabotaged?

Some of you might know that back in 2005, EA and Steven Spielberg decided they would make a “blockbuster game” together. Deals were signed! Development teams formed! Codenames were given! (“LMNO” was the supposed title of the game but it was pronounced “Elemental”.) Progress happened but then things went quiet.

Now, it turns out that the game is officially dead, and some are speculating that it could be because another game beat them to the market.

According to the very first reports on the EA-Spielberg collaboration, the game was set in World War II and players would take on the role of the first Secret Service agents battling the Nazis in covert operations. It was supposed to be “James Bond meets Medal of Honour”. It also sounds somewhat familiar now because Pandemic made the game first. It was called The Saboteur and EA published it as well. Oops.

This is all according to one Jake Kazdal who was on the development team for LMNO and said in a very noncommittal way: “There was some rival game stuff that may or may not have come out of EA that was basically the same thing minus some of the stuff we were doing. There was just a lot of politics.”

Furthermore, CVG is reporting that they have a source that has confirmed that EA felt two Nazi-era spy games were too much, and so LMNO got the axe. Of course, this doesn’t really explain why this got shelved now when The Saboteur came out a while ago.

  1. I just think that these big hollywood directors come into the gaming industry thinking their creativity in the movie genre will suddenly result in uber games with uber sales. Unfortunately it takes many creative ppl, more time and those that have an appreciation for the art to create successful games. Half the time they are there just for image and marketing, contributing nothing to the actual game design.

The same thing happened with the Peter Jackson’s Halo project that got canceled.
