Armello

Yesterday was all about Hideo Kojima’s swansong, Metal Gear Solid V, and to a lesser degree, the post-apocalyptic Mad Max. Two great big AAA blockbuster games released on the same day means that other games may have fallen by the wayside – at least as far as visibility and perception go. Another game was released yesterday though; a far more humble one – though one that’s equally likely to eat up all of your free time, if it’s the sort of thing that tickles your fancy.

That game is Armello, a digital, fantasy strategy board-cum-card game that’s a bit like Redwall meets Game of Thrones. It was released on PC and PlayStation 4 yesterday, and if you’re the sort who likes to throw a few multi-sided dice about a table, it’s very probably worth looking at.

It’s got a launch trailer. Take a look.

Of course, you may recall that Armello was one of the games that was up for vote to be this month’s headlining free game in September’s PlayStation Plus instant game collection – but lost out to Ubisoft’s indie-esque platformer, Grow Home. All’s not lost though – it’s currently 30% off on PlayStation 4 (coming in at R209 on PSN instead of R299), and for $20 on Steam.

“Armello is a grim fairy-tale board game come to life. Full of swashbuckling adventure combining deep, tactical card play, rich tabletop strategy and RPG elements. Wage epic single and multiplayer battles, cast spells, hire agents, and prepare poisons and ruses on your quest for the throne!”

We’ll have a review soon.
