DivX better on the PS3?

49 second read

I have to admit that I don’t know much about DivX but it seems that the Sony has put more effort into DivX than Microsoft did.

According to tech.blorge.com…

First of all, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 is DivX certified. While the Microsoft’s console can only playback some DivX files, the PS3 will get full DivX functionality. This includes the ability for game developers to use the very efficient compression format for in-game cut-scenes.

While the ability to include DivX in a game must be an advantage I fail to see how the developers cannot use DivX in a 360 game since it is a closed system and can easily be tested?

Either way it’s more good news for Sony which seems to be on the rise at the moment.

What is with the ps3 lately??? Ok, Sure It’s the better media machine, so it’s expected that DivX will play better… but even games it’s slowly starting to beat the xbox… Of coarse nothing thats substantial enough to make people think it’s better… but it sure does make you think about the future….

Mean while I’m gonna calibrate that my ps3 has beaten the xbox in some ways 😀 😀 😀 :D…

I’m not surprised at this, I was a little disapointed with the 360’s DiVX support. I eventually gave up waiting for it and sucked it in and bought a media player (Zioncom Playtime). My media player just does it better.

So when are us ps3ers actually going to get Divx?
Can someone tell me if the xbox also supports xvid?
I think xvid is actually more vital than divx as most things seem to be encoded in this way of late!

My xbox plays every file I through at it, with the exclusion of .mkv files.

Have you managed to get it working with a portable hard drive ? It doesn’t list my hard drive as a source when i try. Unless it wants a certain format, i think my drive is NTFS…

@Milesh, it needs to be formatted into a FAT32 file system, so you will most likely have to make a partition on your drive as FAT32 does not go past 32GB.

Yes , im one of the converts ..sold my 360 for my ps3..
I went and bought a GTA tripple pack yesterday, just anothger advantage of ps3. In 1 year I think the PS3 will def beat 360 … Wii will take longer to win.

I seriously pity anyone who sold their 360 to buy a PS3 at this stage. Buy one in addition to but selling a 360 to buy one – thats like selling your car and buying a pair of nikes instead because in the future they may allow you to retrofit a pair of hover boosters.

Burns there are a lot of people selling the xbox’s for ps3’s, its the natural progression 😉

Ja, it needs Fat32. I just shared my 320 gig media drive in WMP11 and now all the xbox’es on my network can stream every media file on my network.

Ya Abev, I realise that. I’m all for evolution though, not regression. At the moment its not worth it. UT3 being the only motivator at the moment, if you must play it now.

Ja but ps3 has the cell 😉
Nah seriously I am so over this whole thing.
Who cares if the dude sold his xbox for a ps3.
It was his choice and he made it.
You enjoy playing on your console and I enjoy playing on mine, irrepsective of what they actually are and that is all that matters!

I took the other step and own both. At the moment my XBOX seems more of a media player, will see what happens when the PS3 gets divx support. Anyone know when that is happening?

Boswald, Sony update software regularly, I doubt we’d have to wait later than mid January for it.

    @Nduimiso:
FAT32 does go past 32GB, you can have any size HDD with FAT32, only thing FAT32 doesn’t allow, is files larger than 4GBs

@Naudran I can’t remember if you can create the partition in windows bigger than 32GB, I remember using a little console app called gdisk to create the larger partition and then just formatted in windows. Not sure if it has changed since then though

@Naudran Not sure if windows has changed but I remember using a little app called gdisk to create a larger far32 partition and then just formatting with windows. Not sure if you still need to do that though

Back on topic whoopy, yay etc etc, who cares about game support?

Any developer who wants it could have embedded it themselves. As a console versus console thing. VC-1 and DivX are bothed based on MPeG4 and offer similar results, DivX gets the nod because “it’s not Microsoft”.

Rumour has it Divx support will land before the end of the year. There will be another update before the year is up to allow for the new Bluray profile, hopefully Divx will piggyback in!

Fat32 can be bigger then 32gb. One of our products at work uses Fat32 on 500gb Harddrives. And I have a 160gb drive that I formatted in fat32 just so I can use it on my Xbox 360 with a IDE to useb converter. Win ME can format a drive of 500gb, it’s XP that has a problem.
