Domodedovo terrorist bombing – Modern Warfare 2 to blame

Yep, it’s this whole thing again. Russian news channel, Russia Today, has aired a report that links the tragic Domodedovo Airport terrorist bombings to Modern Warfare 2. At the same time they have reconfirmed my conviction that humanity is, in fact, completely retarded.

On Monday 24 January 2011, a suicide bomber killed 35 people and seriously injured another 180 in an explosion at Russia’s busiest airport, Domodedovo. According to Russia Today, the “No Russian” mission from Modern Warfare 2 “has sparked hard debate as the stuff of a fictional computer game became shocking reality”. News clip after the jump.

In order to make their one-sided report (no representative from the gaming industry or Activision was consulted) even more convincing, Russia Today interviews Walid Phares, who is a “Global Terrorism Expert”. Phares, being an expert on terrorism and apparently videogames, makes no attempt to rationalise the conclusion, but instead insinuates that terrorists use videogames to train their troops. I know what he means; an Xbox 360 controller has taught me exactly how to wield real-life guns and put together a suicide bomb.

So instead of asking why this happened or how it can be prevented in future, let’s give way to knee-jerk reactions and blame a videogame instead. It’s just so much easier than looking at the facts and trying to find out who was, you know, actually responsible for the events that took place.
