Torchlight

You ever play Torchlight? It’s a rather superb RPG, very much in the same vein as Blizzard’s Diablo. In fact, that’s what made it so successful in the first place, as Torchlight represented the kind of dungeon-exploring option that many gamers wanted Diablo 3 to be when it first launched.

The first Torchlight was a great game, followed by an even better sequel. And just like a jerk who likes to mess with OCD suffered when sharing a Kit-Kat, the best things in life come in threes. So where’s Torchlight 3? Not exactly on the agenda, according to Runic Games company president Marsh Lefler.

“We’re just burnt out. Let’s admit it, Diablo 3 is killing it right now”, Lefler said to IGN, describing how the lack of solid RPGs when Torchlight launched helped that game sell gangbusters.

Diablo 3 is a really fun game. Not that Torchlight 2 isn’t a fun game, it is, but it’s just different. For us to try to compete with Diablo 3? We weren’t trying to compete before.

Fair enough. Torchlight and Diablo 3 are still tonally different RPG experiences, and they’re both fantastic games in their current states. But Runic Games are up to something, as they haven’t exactly been sitting on their hands this whole time. It’s called Hob, and it looks like it’ll be borrowing a few ideas from The Legend of Zelda:

  1. Torchlight 1 was ok. Torchlight 2 was better, but got boring after a playthrough. Torchlight 3 isn’t high on my to-buy list.

NOT FINISHING certain things is different to not starting it

I actually played Torchlight 2 the weekend. Good fun, even if you need to just go smashing something for a few minutes.

and that, for me, was the point of Diablo 2 and torchlight. Smash. Diablo 2 was more fun. Mephisto RUN!

I’m yet to play Diablo 3, but I must admit, after playing Van Helsing with a controller – button smashing is more fun than clicking away like a crazy at one point all the time.

Or you could just, you know, hold down the mouse button. O_o

Any monkey can just hold down a button! It takes precision to repeatedly hit the same one without fault.

Don’t crucify me for saying this, but controller support on this game could be quite nice.
It’s “tonally” different experience, (amirite Darryn?)

Torchlight 2 is cool, I enjoy it, but it’s a game I go to when I don’t feel like playing anything else. It would probably be better if I played co-op with a friend… but none of my friends are playing it… except for the Avo sometimes, but not often.

They’ll need to make Torchlight 3 rather different if they want to hold my attention.

I do the same. When I have time to kill I quickly jump into T2 for a few minutes. Co-op would be quite fun though, I agree.

I played co-op with a friend, it wasn’t that fun. I wanted to run around, explore, break all the things – he killed everything on the way to the objective.

I have 12 friends that own Torchlight 2 (and have installed it and played it a little at least) and I’ve only ever seen you and Avo on the game. O_O

TL2 was fun at first but after about 2 hours i found myself completely skipping the excuses of a dialogue. That’s where Blizzard has and always will shine – story!

You’re all mad! I started playing T2 when it first came out, and haven’t stopped since. I can’t believe that Diablo 3 is their reason for not going into T3, they’re totally different games, and IMO Torchlight is better.
