Don’t hold your breath for a sequel to Spec Ops: The Line

Spec Ops: The Line is one of those defining games of a generation and what makes that all the more surprising is that the gameplay itself was pretty generic, the multiplayer was a complete waste and the graphics were nothing special.

But what really made Spec Ops: The Line a game that you truly have to experience was the incredible story and the trip it takes you on. If you haven’t played it yet then make sure you organise a copy and give the game a go. You won’t regret it.

However if like me you are a massive fan then I have a bit of bad news for you as the developer behind the title, Yager Development, has stated to Gamestar.de that it is highly unlikely that a sequel will ever be made for the game, and further more that they are unlikely to ever make a military shooter again at all.

The reasons for this are twofold. Spec Ops was stuck in development hell for 5 years and therefore ending up not being as profitable as it should be. But possibly more importantly is that the game required so much emotion and research that it ended up emotionally draining the team.

That’s something I can fully understand. Even playing the game left me with some emotional scars that will likely never heal. It’s a pity the market for an intellectual story in a shooter is so small and hopefully a small indie studio out there picks up this idea and brings some more incredible stories to the bravado-laden shooting genre.

I’m actually ok with it not having a sequel, what made that game is the story, development and discovery. And it was completed in the game.

I do hope the the key members of the team get a chance to do something similar.

Absolutely, Spec Ops: The Line was the thinking man’s TPS, it did what it needed to do, and I will always remember it as 2012’s BEST game. It doesn’t need a sequel, but I hope that Yager recovers and continues to make exemplary titles. It’s a real pity that these guys had to struggle where the diluted copy and pasted crap that comes from DiCe, Infinity Ward etc remain profitable year after year.

The game’s story was brilliant, and to be honest, I don’t think I want a sequel. The experience was complete for me

Maybe there is a market for an intellectual story in a shooter, problem being everything is MP MP MP when it comes to modern warfare shooters because that’s where the golden eggs are.

I loved this game. The WTF moments are strong with this one. Reloaded my saved game many times trying to avoid the White phosphorus decision

Funny how other games can have you cheering “I shot him right in the eyeball” but this game make you truly feel bad for doing something despite there being no choice.

I know, probably the first game ever that makes you feel bad for moving the story forward. Reverse psychology in effect

All three of them, who were to busy gun-wanking in Gears of War to notice Spec Ops on release.

Good. Doesn’t need a sequel – it would dilute the entire game. Not everything has to be a damn franchise.

I don’t want a sequel. This game had me at hello.

But I will not mind other games with such a strong storyline where you actually feel the emotion for almost every decision you have to make. Even when you don’t have much choice in the matter.
