Doom 3 vanishes from Steam

Ta dah!

So you’ve gone and retooled an older game, released it in online and hard copy variants, and wondering what the best way is to make some cash off of it. Well, for starters, you could make certain that the game itself is worth asking people to pay for it a second time. OR! And hear me out on this one, you could make damn sure that this newer, buggier version is the only available on digital shelves. Sounds like a sound plan, right? Because that’s just what id has done for Doom 3 BFG Edition.

If you’re looking for the older version of Doom 3, the one that now has eight years worth of mods and add-ons from the fan community, then tough luck. Doom 3 has been removed from the Steam store in favour of the pricier and newer BFG version, and can only be found online now in the far more expensive id Software bundle.

Rock Paper Shotgun queried the move, asking Bethesda and id for some clarification, to which a PR re answered, saying that  “DOOM 3 and Resurrection of Evil are now only available through the BFG Edition, which also includes the Lost Mission. If you already own the original versions of DOOM 3 and Resurrection of Evil, you will still be able to access them from within your Steam library.”

“We do realize that there are fans that would like to purchase the original version of the game, and we’re looking into options for them. When there’s new info to share, we’ll let everyone know.”

As in, don’t hold your breath. The Lost Mission that comes with Doom 3 BFG Edition is essentially recycled, older levels, while the new version of the game has no support yet for mods or fan-made content.

Of course, there are still tons of the game out in the wild, in shops on fabled mediums of storage known as dee vee dees. Better grab ‘em while they’re hot, loyal fans. After all, how dare you wait 8 years to play a game. How dare you.
