DOOM Eternal is recruiting for a choir made up of heavy metal screamers

I don’t think 2016’s DOOM gets enough credit for being so damn good. Hellacious entertainment to the extreme, Id Software’s return to basics with the granddaddy of all gory first-person shooters was a breath of fresh air at the time. Cathartic in its violence, smooth in its movement and sublime in its action, DOOM was pure and unadulterated fun on a bun that was dripping with what I really hope is tomato sauce.

The fact that it had a heck of a soundtrack powering every pull of the trigger and swing of a chainsaw, didn’t hurt its dominance on the charts either. Heck, if you examined the actual code of the in-game music, you’d have found a devilish Easter egg that would have given overprotective mothers a heart attack if it was done in the 1990s.

For 2019’s DOOM Eternal, composer Mick Gordon wants to go even bigger with his plans to give the sequel more metal than the inside of a teenager’s face after a trip to the dentist. If you happen to have a strong set of vocal pipes, you might be interested in the recruitment video below, as Gordon is putting out an open call for performers to send in their work and earn some of that sweet dollar dollar in the process:

“I’m currently writing music for a video game. I really want to record a choir. But for this project, I don’t want to record a regular choir; I want to record a choir made up entirely of Heavy Metal Screamers,” Gordon explained in the video.

To the best of my knowledge, I don’t believe this has ever been done before. Therefore, here is an open invitation to anyone out there who wants to apply to join our Heavy Metal Choir. You must be able to travel to Austin, Texas, for a recording session in the first week of March 2019. You must be over 18 years old. This is not a free gig. You will be paid and you will receive a credit. You will have until the 1st of February 2019 to submit your demo.

I’d give it a bash, but honestly I sound like someone strangling a set of bagpipes that happens to be filled with angry cats. Which is probably why my demo tape would be too brutal for DOOM Eternal’s soundtrack, as Gordon is looking to emulate the sounds of hell on Earth. Not bring it kicking and screaming into our reality for realsies.

Whatever the end result, DOOM Eternal doesn’t just look metal as f***. It’s going to sound like it as well when Hell opens up later this year.

They should have asked for Christian metal vocalists only. If I am going to fight the Demons of hell, might as well do so with the right background music.

It’s actually *quite* a thing. there are many, and some of em are half decent. As an aside, Slayer lead vocalist Tom Araya is a staunch catholic.
