Dota 2 is Steam’s most popular game

Steam

Not entirely too long ago, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim held the record on Steam for being the title with the most number of concurrent players – somewhere in the region of 287, 411 people playing the decidedly single player RPG at the same time. That record has been broken – and the new record is a game that’s not even been released yet.

Yup, Dota 2 – the game that’s an adaptation of a Warcraft 3 mod that’s an adaptation of a StarCraft Map is now the most popular single title on Steam, racking up 297,116 concurrent users. The second most played game at this very moment is Valve’s microtransaction driver Hat-exchange simulator, Team Fortress 2, with just 71,593 concurrents. Skyrim? that’s down to less than 50 thousand people.

That’s pretty impressive for a game that’s a) not officially out yet, and b) competes with other a number of other games in the same genre, such as League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth,  that are virtually indistinguishable to the uninitiated.

Of course, one reason for the game’s propagation is that Valve seems to just hand out handfuls of Beta keys to anyone who even looks in their direction.

Sometimes Steam sends me a beta key to try and lure me back… I don’t have enough friends to give all the keys away.

        Surely you mean axaxax! 😛

The language filter worked for the first week, but the russians are like the plague, they don’t discriminate. Tick all game modes, all servers, all languages. Even the Brazillians are complaining about them!

We need a South African server with the entire Russian IP range blocked.

        hehe, well trolled sir.

Let me rephrase, I need a FULL SOUTH AFRICAN team to jam with.

Every time a few Saffas jam together its so much more enjoyable.

add me on steam “kobusnel3d” I don’t play like an addict, but at least you’ll have someone to jam with, and many of my buddies play more often than me, so it’s a start 😛

Easiest thing to do is to join the Dota 2 South African chat channel (just search it in-game). If you need help lemme know 🙂 Ill post up a screenie of how to do it. I dont know if they would be ok with you playing with them sexually though 😛

WINNING! That number is just going to keep growing 🙂 There may be a teeny push for some single player too at some stage. In the last update they released a quest (which is inevitably a tutorial), but it could be the starting point of some nice story telling quests ^_^
