Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden will have 20 playable characters out of a 100

I’m currently digging Dragon Ball XenoVerse. It’s tight, looks great and the 3D combat is a right treat when you get to grips with it. Thing is, some of the best Dragon Ball Z games have been constrained to two dimensions of action. Games such as Dragon Ball Z: Super Sonic Warriors and the Butoden series are prime examples of this. And that’s why I’ve got my eye on the upcoming Extreme Butoden on 3DS. It looks as charming as can be, with proper 2D sprites destroying planets left, right and center. But you’ll only have a few of them to play with, despite the massive cast that will be present in the game.

Only 20 Z warriors, to be exact. While there will be a 100 characters in the game, the majority of them will be relegated to support and assist attacks. Players will be able to recruit up to five characters, such as a Saiyan onslaught with Vegeta, Bardock and Gohan helping out with a Kamehameha wave attack, or recruiting gods such as Beerus and Broly to help even the odds. Or you can form a disappointment team that consists of Raditz, the other Raditz AKA Yamcha and Mr Satan. That’ll show ‘em…nothing.

As for the actual roster, it looks like your old favourites will be present, fighters such as:

  • Goku
  • Vegeta
  • Gotenks
  • Cell
  • Frieza
  • Android 18
  • Adult Trunks
  • Nappa
  • Piccolo
  • Raditz
  • Captain Ginyu
  • Bardock
  • Krillin
  • Teen Gohan
  • Adult Gohan
  • Majin Buu
  • Kid Buu
  • Broly
  • Beerus

The game is out in Japan on June 11. I’ll be learning how to play the Dragon Ball Z theme on guitar until then. Or giving up easily and asking Shenron to make me a rock god instead. No wait, he can’t grant wishes that are outside of his power. Dammit!

Just explain this to me. Is Dragon Ball Z really that good that it’s still hot even today, or is it now just a case of the franchise getting milked in a bad way?

I am so tempted to just say “Ah f**ck it!” and go home.

“I’m feeling lazy and I have to make a game with over 100 characters with distinct fighting styles.
How can I go about doing almost no work and still make this game…
Hm, if I leave out most of the characters and only do about a dozen or so them it would be easy… but people will complain… what if I did 2 dozen characters and then just had the others show up for a brief few seconds to do some kind of support or assist attack…
    GENIUS!!”

I read that last bit as “support or racist attack…” This day is too long… 🙁

…or, it’s asw (who have something vaguely resembling design sense) and having 20 characters is already pushing it
