Dragon Quest Heroes is looking pretty on both PlayStation consoles

Dragon Quest Herpes

If there’s one JRPG series out there that doesn’t get nearly enough love in the West, it has to be Dragon Quest. It’s a franchise that has been knocking around since 1986, although it wasn’t until 2005 when the series stopped publishing itself as Dragon Warriors and started growing the Quest brand. A new game is on the way, Dragon Quest Heroes, for both old and new consoles. And I like what I’m seeing.

Square Enix has some new gameplay videos up. As usual, you’ll get the best result if you click on through to YouTube to see the game running at 60fps. This is in no way an advertisement for YouTube. That would just be crazy, like the car prices at Barry Lipshitz Autos. Can you believe those premiums?

PS4

PS3

So beyond the cosmetic, what’s really all that different in the PS4 and PS3 versions of Dragon Quest? According to Square Enix, they are:

Game Content

  • The content of the game will be exactly the same across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

Functionality Differences

  • PlayStation 4 – Take screenshots and record video, broadcast gameplay via live streams, Share Play with friends (as far as the opening dragon battle), and Remote Play on PS Vita.

Frame Rate

  • PlayStation 4 – Characters move more smoothly. The game runs at 60 frames per second.
  • PlayStation 3 – The game runs at 30 frames per second.

Graphics

  • PlayStation 4 – Characters, environments, effects, and such have a more delicate expression. Additionally, in cases where large armies of monsters appear, more monsters will be displayed on screen.
  • PlayStation 3 – In cases where large armies of monsters appear, some monsters will be hidden. However, the difficulty of these battles will not change.

Dragon Quest Heroes is due out in Japan on February 26. Hopefully a Western release won’t be too far behind, as I need me an Akira Toriyama fix that Dragon Ball can’t fix these days. More of a Dynasty Warriors-inspired game, Dragon Quest Heroes is a spin-off from the main series. And I’m not ashamed to admit that I kind of dig the hell out of those games.

  1. I’d get this if it launches here. Looks like a fun game to play. Maybe a bit repetitive…

Bah, not holding my breathe. Dragon Quests games hardly comes this way. Still waiting on the remake of DQ 7 which is the REAL DQ I need. I loved DQ/W 7 on PS1, was a bit archaic but damn, it was pure adventure bliss….
