Désilets’ 1666 “the new Assassin’s Creed”

The back-and-forth between Ubisoft and former employee and Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets has not been pleasant. We guessed that Ubisoft might have snapped up Désilets’ 1666 from the embers of THQ because it was a potential threat to its Assassin’s Creed empire – and that Désilets was “let go” and his team disbanded as a giant “up yours” from his former employer. That might be the case.

“It was to be the new Assassin’s Creed,” Désilets said of 1666 in an interview with Gamereactor (via Gameranx.) “The first year was to build the team, to study [the historical era], but also to create a new IP.”

We’ve been shown very little about the game, which was in pre-production. Désilets says his team was focused on gameplay and mechanics for the time being.

“It was not easy because I was a little guy jumping around with a sword, and [we] were making a shooter. We were trying something different, to expand borders again,” he said. As far as the actual narrative and just how it might compete with Assassin’s Creed and its grand tales of conspiracy, Désilets said:

“Rembrandt was still alive in 1666, died in 1669. I took one of his most famous paintings, The Philosopher, and put it in the design documents – so I referred to this matter, more or less.”

Désilets is currently fighting to regain control of the 1666 IP, which Ubisoft has put “on hold.”

I always wondered, how far does protection of IP go with developers. I get that you are hired by a company to work on something, but do you really hold no artistic rights to your creations?

Yup… the choices are as simple as they are scary… a) Be damn creative but try to find funding/make a living or b) Work for some-one and let them take all the glory (and the rights).

Agreed. On the one hand I can understand a company wanting to protect its investment, but I think more and more that is killing creativity in the market.

Ja, it’s a pity. These creators pour their lives into their projects, make the masterpiece of their respective lifetimes, and promptly have to let go of their creations to get it out there. I wonder how game publishing compares to book publishing. If game creation didn’t require large teams, and put the names of the creators out there, like books, it might not be as much of a problem. As it stands, developers hardly earn recognition for the games they create, and individuals are considered disposable by the corporations backing them

Well said. Not sure if you have read the Shining Girls by lauren Beukes, but she was saying that she was actually allowed to run with her own creativity, and team of researchers. Which is why the book rocks harder than a 70’s Greek porn star.

Am I alone in wondering how hard does a 70’s greek porn star rock so that I can make an accurate comparison?

            Decent concept but pulpy execution.

            July 9, 2013 at 12:06

You really thought so? I thought the execution was spot on, from the different tones of the characters through the ages, to the visceral descriptions of certain events.

            July 9, 2013 at 12:18

I did. It’s a fun ride but I was left somewhat underwhelmed. It reminded me a bit of American Psycho in that the concept and narrative are far more interesting than the reading of the book itself… still, both kept the pages turning. That said, I’m curious (with optimistic trepidation) to see what they can do with the planned on-screen adaptation.

Ah, I see what you mean. And agreed. Yeah, I believe ol Di Caprio’s production company has bought the rights. I wonder who would make good main characters!
