DualShock 4 controller issues are getting worse

1 min read

Over at Neogaf there is a long-running thread discussing whether or not the DualShock 4 has issues with excessive wear on the analogue sticks or not.

We’ve mentioned this briefly before but now that the PlayStation 4 is out in America we can finally answer the question officially.

So does the Dualshock 4 have issues with excessive wear on the sticks? Well absolutely maybe it does. According to all the reports coming in it seems like a certain percentage of the controllers do in fact have issues but at the same time it definitely isn’t affecting all controllers.

Take a look at some of the pictures we’re collated and you will see the common trend through a lot of the different users.

It seems that there was a bad batch of rubber that will in deed rub off very quickly so hopefully the Americans got that entire batch and we will be fine when it releases locally next month. However if it’s a design issue then we could be looking at a DualShock 4.1 in the very near future.

DualShock 4 Problems

Click the images to view them in full size. Warning some of the files are pretty large

As you can see some of the controllers seem okay but the vast majority are showing some sort of wear with some of them already peeling off entirely.

But we can trust that this isn’t an issue because Sony are great at controller design right?

boomrang

Oh wait.. never mind

In related news someone has also posted a video showing a sticky bumper button on a new DualShock 4, thankfully his controller was replaced without question.

However this doesn’t look like a once off issue as this next video as the exact same problem

Yeap, cutting corners is the problem. The PS4 will be my last console. After this it’s back to PC gaming, where the graphics look much better, the games can be modded, and the frame rates typically much better. Consoles are perhaps the biggest ripoff in the electronic entertainment industry. Makes me sick to think that when a new console comes out, its design is based off hardware 5 years older more. Disgusting.

The irony of being called a Sony fanboy despite having never owned a Sony console before. In all honestly I couldn’t care less if there are problems with the quality of the PS4 controller. All I’m saying is why are no other media outlets covering this story? Seems a bit sketchy to make a judgement based on a bunch of fanboys raging at each other on NeoGAF.

Here is the Irony, I had both Consoles, 360 and PS3, I only ever owned One PS4 ( Two but I had to sell the one when I was going through some tough times ) I owned a total of 4 different 360s. First 360, Got Bored and sold it. Second 360, Had to buy cause Gears was not being released on PC anymore. Red light of death. Took it back and had to fight tooth and nail to get a new one and not a refurbished one. Managed to do so. Heard that the first one I bought died a horrible death. Again, Sold my 360, Going through tough times. That one conked out as well and then my moms bought me one which I subsequently sold to put a down payment on my pS4.

I’ve got 2 PS3, I’ve had no issues with the either console, just the controllers. DS3, I’ve broken that hard plastic ring around the left joystick on about 4 controllers.

I was hoping they would have learnt from last design issues.

This is part of the reason I don’t pre-order games/hardware anymore.

Always a few things that could not have been caught in beta testing which only pops up when millions of units are out there.

With these I am thinking a batch maybe just had a bad rubber mix applied to them hopefully. Either way Sony will make sure you get what you paid for. I am sure they will replace these at not further cost.

I only bought Sim City later on when all the server/mechanic issues were fixed.

Many people didn’t by D3 at launch because of the server issues.

Battlefield 3 I had a lot of issues with till after a few patches and graphic driver upgrades.

        So I wait…

But not the same game as on the release… Which is my point really… See they have received patches and updates. Which make them different than the game that came out on day one.

          • Sageville

            November 18, 2013 at 13:44

Sure, you assume the pre-ordered game buyer isn’t going to install patches or updates, all your examples are online games that don’t work without being patched.

Your argument only works for peeps with no internet access or games that don’t get patches or updates. I’ll give you that.

          • UltimateNinjaPandaDudeGuy

            November 18, 2013 at 13:59

But the patches only come around later on… Month or 2 maybe or even later and server issues also take time especially when it is new servers that need to be rolled out.

So let’s take Sim City as an example. I skipped paying R400 for it (paid R200 on special BT games digital game store thing) and also skipped having to deal with traffic problems and server issues that I read about quickly.

I just tend to skip early game adoption nowadays for these reasons. I bought the D3 collectors edition and was lucky enough to barely get error 37 ever, but then again I am a 100% Diablo Fanboy.

For other games I give it a month or 6 before I buy it, because of the savings and, if there were any, skipping issues needing patching etc…

Hardware is kind of the same general idea, but you obviously wait for some physical fixes in newer models.

There is no situation where most of that damage happens naturally, most of it looks cut, or gouged, or scraped. That’s not normal wear and tear. Conversely, you have people who’ve played on them for hours and hours on end, with no issues. So, who’s to be believed?

Anyway, I just returned from Best Buy. I got a refund. The girl that helped me out was a little hesitant but her manager was cool and said to just hand me a new controller. I will come back and update in about a week.

The controllers just plain suck. My original is a sticking bumper which is very frustrating in games like fifa 14. And the spare I bought wore out the rubber on the analog stick in less than 2 weeks and has the exact same sticking button. Dear sony, you suck for stealing my money and giving me such a poor product. 59$ us for the second controller and it isn’t even usable. I’m just shelving my brand new console until sony steps up. My advice is don’t buy it until then.

I’m on my 3rd controller… Not the sticks … But L1 button… Everytime after 3 weeks odd of use the L1 button starts to click and stick… Game replaced it twice but on the last replacement told me that they couldn’t replace another one because Sony refuse to accept their controllers are faulty an are putting it down to how we play… Five of my friends bought a ps4 upon launch… All have had the same issue… The guy at the game store tried to tell me that out of 200 odd ps4’s only 5 people had returned the controller with this issue.. But I have a lot of gaming hours under my belt and I guarantee that if yours hasn’t started sticking and clicking… Give it time and it will… It’s a shame because it’s a nice pad but it’s got real big problems… FIFA is a nightmare with this defect … It doesn’t affect battlefield so much … But the controller makes me want to punch sony in the face.. Hard!

    How
do I complain and to who? I have this beautiful ps4 and a crappie made
controller, the first one Brock in the first 2-3 weeks and as I took it apart
to see why it was sticking I noticed the r2 button crack on one side of hinge
pin this is a bit of plastic that flexes to one side when the trigger is pulled
hard, so never mind I paid for another controller at £60 so not to wait 2-3
weeks for replacement, “that’s one game gone” this has now started to
stick like the first so I had a look by pulling the trigger back and you can
see that the hinge pin is broken again in the same place as before, the plastic
on the bottom size and the trigger with one contact leg makes this flex puts
stress on one side of the hinge until it breaks off I can’t understand
why these are so poor considering the old ones work perfectly for many years
and are still working today, if this is going to continue at £60 a go then do I
go back to Xbox? Or wait for a controller made by a third party, the internet
is full of R2 and L2 issues the buttons are over sensitive on R2 L2
buttons and I have seen larger return springs on a pen so they don’t return
properly, my second went today during a community challenge on black flag so
not happy with this at all, this is the second controller to break on me and to
have two go with in weeks shows that major problem exists that will no
doubt get a lot worse and pull down ps4 name this is pathetic considering the
quality of the old you better come up with a plan Sony as people are getting angry

Ebay has the same exact analog sticks for the DS4 for sale. I bought a 10 Pack and it only cost me about $9. All you have to do is carefully unscrew the controller and remove the damaged analog stick and replace it with the new one. They feel and look exactly the same as the originals because they were made in China which is where the controllers were made. It’s cheaper and faster than having to send the controller to Sony to get it fixed.
