Sony showed of their prototype motion controller to us all at the conference and I have to say that while the technology looks impressive the actual demonstration left a lot to be desired.
I have never given a press conference myself but even I can tell you that demonstrating a glowing lolli-pop to a hardcore crowd is going to elicit a bunch of sniggers and from that moment on you are climbing a mountain.
They did state straight away that it was a prototype and the final design will be different but seriously, this is the biggest gaming conference on the planet and you arrive with that?
Then proceeded to show us all how badly the engineers are at sports and graphic design…
However that being said they did manage to save themselves with an awesome second demo showing off how you can dual wield controllers to implement a virtual cross bow or chuck some ninja stars at the incoming horde.
I have no idea if their technology is more capable than Microsoft’s but the Redmond giant wiped the floor with them in motion controller demonstrations.
I was highly impressed by the ability to write with Sony’s controller though, that was pretty awesome.

I do agree that for games you are going to need certain
trigger buttons. Not too bad. Just hope they change
the shape of that dildo

this to me is more appealing that microsoft’s… although ms’s offering looks more sophisticated, i just don’t like the idea of karate kicking free air or driving without any steering device.
whatever happens, nintendo’s motion controller has forever changed how react with the games we play (or going to be playing in the future)

But if you wanted to hold a little dildo shaped object… you could do everything that Sony’s one offers on MS’s one… but you can’t kick on Sony’s one…
With MS’s one, you could hold a tupaware lid and it would work… I think Sony are just behind the times…
Again…

Shame, maybe the dude’s just not a public speaker.
I know the feeling 🙁
But ja, think they should’ve chosen someone else.
The dude doing the demo could’ve done it.

mmm… a dildo or tupaware lid… in that case i reckon i’m gonna stick the bog standard controller and leave the plastic novelties for the hen parties.
in any case both approaches are essentially gimmicks, intended to fool the user into a false sense of immersion.

I’m loughing sideways at this attempt.

true immersion is having to stick some kind of electrode at the base of your neck. Something tells me it ain’t gonna happen. So any gimmick that gets us to suspend our disbelief (false sense of immersion as you say), is AWESOME!

i totally disagree… a good story line will always trump a gimmick albeit an ‘awesome’ gimmick.
read a good book or watch a well produced movie and you become immersed, games work the same way.
personal preference i suppose.

this was just a prototype. it won’t look anything like that

Shame, I agree, it was not the best presentation. Project Natal was FAR more impressive from that perspective.
But, with that said, it doesn’t take a genius to see how much more realistic the Sony implementation is. Its briliance is in the simplicity, and it is clearly far more accurate and precise than Natal; the best I’ve seen. And yeah, buttons = a must have.

just because microsoft showed you Natal’s project vision doesnt mean that its gonna work that well… i really have my doubts about it. i mean did you see the 1 second delay on natal. that really wont work in a game!

i’m not crazy about controller-less play. i mean people freaked out about the sixaxis not having rumble and now the MS people are raving about well not having anything…
sony at least showed you the many uses of the controller, and 1:1 motion tracker is way better than delayed and possibly buggy tracking.

I personally am way more excited about project Natal for movies, signing in and basically all the added extras that brings with it.

i agree, project natal is way more exciting. i mean its an amazing technology. natal is very ambitious whilst the sony motion controller is much more practical
i also prefer the minority report type uses.

Can’t see natal being able to track you trying to “pull the trigger” and most of the stuff on the natal videos was what they envisioned it doing and nothing actually working, except for that paint splashing around thing, or did I miss another live demonstration video?
Sony’s solution makes more sense and seems to be much more responsive. I think the eyetoy alone can easily handle some of the stuff shown in the MS video, like browsing through a movie collection, if someone bothered to write the software.
