After two years of expansion games, Assassin’s Creed is finally getting a proper third sequel. But can it revamp the franchise, in the same way that the second game did, several years ago. You better believe it, because revolution is in the air, and we’re not talking about a history lesson here.

We finally got to see some proper gameplay footage of Connor in action today, and man, he did not disappoint. While Assassin’s Creed looks familiar enough for veteran players to be comfortable with, it’s obviously revamped the combat.

Connor fights like a cross between Errol Flynn and Mel Gibson in the Patriot, combining quick blows, with cover and gun attacks of his own. One scene has him grabbing a British redcoat soldier using his body to shield him from a lead peppering, before he takes off to cave some skulls in.

Gone are the days of being surrounded and waiting for an enemy to close in so that players can counter him. Connor is a man of action, a predator caught between two beasts of the new world, as he uses all his skills to take on entire armies, inspiring those around him.

Slick, fast and impressive. This is the Assassin’s Creed that we were meant to be playing, years ago.
