EA admits Star Wars: Battlefront isn’t very deep

For many, Star Wars: Battlefront is a terrible value proposition. With games being so ludicrously expensive, the prospect of buying what’s perceived as half a game is enough to dissuade even ardent Star Wars fans from giving Battlefront a skip.

Worse than that though, is that while the game may indeed be fun, it’s as deep as a wading pool. Anybody going in to it expecting the sort of depth you’d get in just about any other competitive shooter is going to end up as disappointed as most fans after watching The Phantom Menace.

That lack of depth seems to have been conscientious decision on EA and DICE’s part though – and for better or worse, it’s a bit of a shallow, hollow experience. You’d never expected it, but EA has admitted that the game is perhaps on the shallow side.

“Star Wars Battlefront is a first-person shooter, but it is [one of] the only teen-rated first-person shooters. We had designed it to be a much more accessible product to a wide age group,” EA’s Blake Jorgenson said, speaking at a NASDAQ conference (Via Gamespot).

“So, an 8-year-old could play with his father on the couch, as well as a teenager or 20-year-old could play the game and enjoy it. It is more accessible. And for the hardcore, it may not have the depth that they wanted in the game.”

That, they admit, may have dissuaded those who play shooter games and expect them to be more on the competitive side; which, by my reckoning, is most people who play shooter games. While Battlefront may indeed be a blast to play, its lack of depth isn’t helping with player retention.

Despite this admission, EA still expects the game to sell 13 million copies by the end of its financial year end, bolstered – they hope – by interest in the upcoming Star Wars Film.

That just means it’s the perfect Star Wars game.

I suppose it is. As a Star Wars fan that absolutely hates CoD and barely plays Battlefield I am having loads of fun in Battlefront.

Why would any self respecting parent let an 8 year old play a teen rated first person shooter?

Because the 8 year old can handle Star Wars levels of violence? He has a cool dad that can think for himself and knows what his kid can and cannot handle?

DING! Correct answer. Hopefully the dad put the time into checking what the game was about before handing it to his kid.

Sorry, as an uncle of a 9 year old gamer, I take good care of what he does or doesn’t play.

See. WIth all the gameplay videos, articles and what nots on the net, I cannot believe some parents still go “But I did not know what this game was all about!” when they buy GTA V for Tiny Timmy

Yeah, I met these two boys from England on GTAV, aged 9 and 11, their mom walked into the shop and bought them the game.

            Parenting fail… according to me.

My dad let me watch all the violent stuff. (Well, violent for the time) So I cannot imagine him going no way at GTA V. He did have a bone to pick with sex and such. So in that regard I can see him going no way at GTA V.
But see, my Dad had a Talk with me when I got to the appropriate age. Under his guidance violence and such never affected me in a way that would make me go bash a guys skull in if he looked at me sideways.

I was allowed later on. Friday the 13th style though. Only because my dad believed I believed that if ever I have sex outside of marriage I would die a horrible death at the hand of a psycho in a hockey mask.
Or get a girl pregnant. Not sure which would have been worse…

My dad let me get away with a lot, including buying Duke Nukem 3D when I was WAY too young to get it, nevermind play it. I played Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Leisure Suit Larry, etc, etc… and I feel that it killed off my sensitivity to a lot of things, which really isn’t a good thing (according to me). It also had a very similar effect on my brother, so he and I have a very solid stand point on what my nephew can and can’t play.

With today’s games, I cannot blame you two. Games back then was not as violent and detailed as it is today. I dunno, but to me real violence only came about in Mortal Kombat, which I only saw for the first time when I was in Matric or thereabouts.

            December 7, 2015 at 15:38

Yeah. But it was animated violence, very cartoonishly done, and set in a very immature game. Does it even count? Doom on the other hand…

I think that’s debatable, but there were quite a few really, even on the NES.

I think one of the most vicious games that comes to mind was Double Dragon… nothing like two guys walking the streets and beating the hell out of people.

          • Jan Prins

            December 7, 2015 at 15:55

Well, they did capture their girlfriend… I am more worried about the moral lesson at the end of the game. Twin brothers or creepily close best friends can beat the snot out of each other for a girl.

            December 7, 2015 at 15:58

            Yeah that too.

My family (most of them at least) always check with me if a game would be ok for their kids/nephews/nieces/grandkids… it’s fun.
