EA enters the MOBA arena with Dawngate

Dawngate2

We’ve wondered before if perhaps the MOBA market – currently dominated by League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth and Dota 2 – was becoming a bit too crowded. There’s no way that even those three can be included in all eSports events, but it does seem that MOBA is the current genre du jour – with Smite, Sins of a Dark Age, Infinite Crisis, and even Blizzard All-Stars on the horizon. Well, add another to the list, because EA wants in on the MOBA action.

Dawngate is a new EA-published MOBA title developed by Waystone Games, who could well be the rebranded arm of Visceral’s Free-to-play studio.

What the dickens is Dawngate though? According to the game’s beta sign-up page:

Dawngate

Dawngate is a new MOBA, built from the ground up to look and feel familiar while offering a whole new way to experience MOBA gameplay. Dawngate empowers you to forge the champions you love for the roles you want in a competitive arena, shaped by ever-evolving, community-driven content and story.

It seems like just about everybody feels it needs a MOBA. Do you care? Do you think that the world just can’t do without even more MOBA action?

I sincerely care about how little I care about these games. Thus I have made a post informing you all of how little I care. This sort of caring will go a long way with making developers realise that people like me (who genuinely care) honestly couldn’t care less. Unless, of course, developers start to care about the caring players, who will in turn care about caring. And may in fact start caring.

    The End.

There are many shooting games and not all are WCG or Esport.
Many racing, sports, RTS and platform.

So another MOBA is the same to me as any other game.
Will it get athe same following as the others, i don’t know, very late out the gate and same for all the others comming.

We don’t play the shooters from 5 years ago, so maybe being a bit late could be a good thing too.

yeah, but we’re still playing the same mobas from 7-8 years ago.
EAs moba wont survive, its not possible for them to steal users from the dota or LoL fanbase.

unless its so unlike dota or LoL, that it wont have to, and pull fans from somewhere else.

I’m really not a MOBA fan. I am trying (emphasis on trying) to get in to DOTA2 but I am just not a)grasping it b)feeling it.

Maybe if I get better at it, it would be better?

Either way I don’t think there is enough space in the industry for yet another MOBA game.

This kind of follow-the-leader stuff happens in all the entertainment-related industries, because they see one guy making millions & believe that if they copy that formula they’ll automatically make millions too.

It can work in single-player games pretty easily, but multiplayer is a whole different story because you have to get whole game communities to shift from one title to another. How many people have branded their MMOs as WoW-killers but they were anything but?
