In a statement that must be sending shivers down the brick and mortar retailers; EA has come out and announced that it expects digital sales to make up 20% of its sales in 2011.
However it’s not all doom and gloom for retailers as EA are expecting a large portion of that to come from micro transactions performed in game which is not likely to have any impact on original game sales and is simply a new revenue stream that is being created.
Digital sales are obviously hugely appealing to publishers and developers as they don’t need to share their profit with anyone else but it’s going to be a long time before the world is ready to accept digital only games in their entirety.
What’s more likely is that publishers will start dropping the initial price of their discs and then make more profit on micro-transactions and DLC.
