EA is giving SimCity owners a free game

So the disastrous SimCity launch is now nearly over and things are pretty much stable –  but EA knows we haven’t forgotten about what happened. And to try and please the angry mobs they have come out and stated that if you have activated a copy of SimCity before the 25th of March 23:59 PDT then you can pick one of these games for free.

  • Battlefield 3 (Standard Edition)  – Got
  • Bejeweled 3 – Got
  • Dead Space 3 (Standard Edition) – Got
  • Mass Effect 3 (Standard Edition) – Got
  • Medal of Honor Warfighter (Standard Edition)   – Got
  • Need For Speed Most Wanted (Standard Edition)  – Got
  • Plants vs. Zombies – Got (3 times)
  • SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition – Had

So that’s a grand total of nothing for me… but hey I’m sure there is something here for the majority of gamers out there right?

If you do want to get your free game keep an eye on your inbox for an email from EA telling you how it all works. But remember you have to redeem it by the 30th of March else your chance is gone forever.

But two are essentially $10 games. It’s a weird list. The value discrepancy between the titles are huge, and you can only choose one. That generally hints that some poor intern had to quickly throw a list together, while the head honchos swim in their money lake.

Not really a list that lights a fire under your ass. I’m surprised they didn’t throw in Dragon Age 2, for lulz, or one of the many sports titles.

But I love how they hide a little clause in the fine print, that states: after you accept your “free game”, you waive your right to seek a solution via litigation. What gamers really should do is take them to the courts. CLASS ACTION ACTION BABY!

Don’t want any free games (got my notice from EA this morning), just want SimCity off-line play, that’s all….oh, and bigger cities + the ability to make a second connection to the free way + better AI.

Not happening as the game was designed to require other players. The offline hack that some guy made worked, but the game was crappy coz there weren’t other players to provide essential services that one needs (as you cannot provide all of those yourself since the maps are too small). To have what you are asking would require them to rebuild the game from the ground up.

It was a crappy business decision in the beginning that caused this and it’s here to haunt us and the developers for years to come

I have this odd feeling that the game engine won’t allow it. Although a nice elegant solution (well as elegant as it can be on this)

the servers are just handling the synchronization for the region and stuff, no real calculations,,, multiple modders (and sources from the inside) already said it would be VERY easy to make a offline mode

in fact,,,, just rip out your internet cable while your playing,,, it works perfectly. The only thing that’s stopping you is the build in 20 min offline timer.

I read an article, can’t remember where, that showed that a guy hacked the game to play offline permanently (A way to increase that 20min offline timer to unlimited)

What happened was that he could build, but only up to a point. Since the cities cannot extend beyond the small pace given, it is impossible to contain everything you need in 1 small little region. The game is designed so that you MUST have input from other players to progress beyond certain points. So it’s possible, but the game sucks offline simply because you cannot achieve everything you would normally be able to due to the fact that there are no other players.

So the real challenge in to turning it offline is how to get around the fact that the game was designed to have other player inputs. That is the main problem.

Gav – you forgot to mention that all of the games listed with ‘Standard version’ come with absolutely bugger all DLC, still gotta shell out for that. (BF3 and ME3 Definitely need that DLC)

Well, I guess that’s not too bad. At least they admit to being wrong. But I’d much rather prefer if a gaming company said the following
“Due to the huge success of [insert a game that actually was worth it and perfect] we have decided to gift you guys with a free game from our library. Not to say sorry for something but rather to say thank you! Here is a list of games you can claim.”

    Wouldn’t that be amazing?

Lulz, That’s maybe a bit over the top. They still need to make money. So I understand that. But wouldn’t it be great if every now and then when you purchase a game that does exceptionally well that you get a free copy of any previous game that has reached gold status or whatever as a thank you?

Yes, as a reward for buying their price instead of a sorry. Great idea. I’m pretty sure they make enough money and 1 copy of a digital game to 1.1 million people (estimated Sim City sales so far) won’t break the bank.

People couldn’t connect to the servers for a few days. There were gameplay issues and bugs that really should have been picked up in quality checking. That kind of thing. Think Diablo III. Same kinda nonsense
