EA reveals ludicrously expensive Star Wars Battlefront season pass alongside three new modes

Star Wars Battlefront has a $50 season pass

It’s no secret that I’ve been loving the Star Wars Battlefront beta, and the short, limited slice of intergalactic shooting fun convinced me to actually purchase a multiplayer-only title at launch for the first time in a very long time. Almost, as EA sent reality crashing down on mine and everyone’’ else’s heads last night, revealing a season pass with a price that deserves to live in a galaxy far, far away.

Or at the very least, in a Sarlacc Pit with the remains of Boba Fett.

But first, a little good news. If you’ve been playing the beta you no doubt saw the extensive menu of locked game modes that would be available at launch. Three of these now have more details around them. Droid Run is a tight 6v6 mode where players scramble to collect GNK powered droids around the map, while Cargo acts as a Star Wars spin-off of traditional capture the flag. If Drop Zone has taught me anything about these smaller modes, it’s that they’ll probably be the most fun.

The third mode sounds a little ridiculous to be frank. Hero Hunt places one of eight players in control of a particular hero (with the exact one being determined by the map). As this lone player controlling Luke, Vader, Fett or any other hero runs around, the remaining seven players are tasked with hunting her or she down. Considering it took merely half that number to fall in battle most times as a hero on Hoth, I do have to wonder how frustrating this mode will become very quickly.

But while that’s speculation, the Battlefront season pass is just upright madness. Not only does EA and DICE not really know when the expansions will be out, they have no idea what they’re even going to contain given the vague press release. What we do know is that the Season Pass will grant victims fans the chance to play each expansion two-weeks early, as well as give them a “Shoot First” emote. Because that’s really what defines value it seems.

This is where your "Shoot First" emote can go

The pass itself cost no less than $50, bringing the total Star Wars Battlefront experience to a staggering $110. That’s still $10 more than the new Ultimate Edition, which includes the season pass and some arbitrary unlocks that no more deserve your money. For a game that’s only got a handful of small single-player missions and is predominantly a multiplayer one, that’s ludicrous at best. In fact, it’s ludicrous even if the game shipped with a campaign. Season Passes shouldn’t cost nearly the same price as the core game.

But hey, at least there aren’t any microtransactions, right? RIGHT?

      Yes, and no.
Technically not anymore, since Disney scrubbed everything that happened outside the films.

I enjoy the art more than anything else, since they get a different artist to do each of the stories. I like the take they have on some of the characters and their expressions (obviously not the case with Boba Fett :P) Some artists really have a way of portraying a character so uniquely suiting.
Though I’m with you there on books, definitely a better read. I only own a small amount of graphic novels anyway, all of which are Star Wars.

Everything with them is a PR stunt. They say “No microtransactions” so people go out and pre-order, then they just bring out stupidly priced DLC.
They said the same thing about the new NFS, but they can keep that sh!t too. You can’t trust EA with anything.

Uplay was down last night for most of the time, so naturally I couldn’t play any of my Uplay games.

I am still going to get the game, though I won’t buy the season pass as I cannot spend that type of money on an unknown.

I probably will get the DLC if I can see them adding value to the game.

Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with a game costing $110 if it is worth $110. Bear in mind some people spend significantly more than that on eating out.

I didn’t specify it had to be a one night quickie. Most people spend much more than R1200 on eating out during the year.

R1200 is a lot of money for one game. For that amount I don’t want to hear words like “value” and “online experience” when they talk about DLC
I want to know that they’ll at least provide enough content to keep me invested for at least two years. Guess we’ll wait for the review then.

At the current exchange rate it’s close to R 1470…. There is not a way in hell I’ll pay that for a single title with “added content”, hell, you get collectors editions of games that are cheaper than that, with extra physical goodies and then some DLC…this is the biggest cash grab scheme I’ve seen in a while…And it disgusts me, it makes me cringe, not because of the price, but the principle of selling half of a game and then trying to push sales of “added content” at exorbitant prices….it is appalling…

        Drinks. Easy.

Except I do not drink. We used to spend around R500 for a good meal eat, starter and main. Perhaps some tea and one drink.

with or without alchol? If without, the prices have gone up since we last ate at Pachas. We did prefer La Pentola, where spending R350 on a main is possible. Or JillSide Tavern, hmm STEAK. but too dark.

Last time we had starters, mains, dessert (each) and my wife had 3 ice tea’s and I had 4 beers, little over a grand.

Oh, and when last were you at Hillside Tavern?

How many expansions in the season pass then? What do you get for it? Where is the value?

How can I buy shares in EA from SA without attracting large customs duties?

This is how you kill gaming. Charge stupid amounts of money. While im at it the way things are going with games today just pisses me off. Perfect example: I built my brother a really awesome i7 gaming pc and can run anything under the sun with no issues. Now my issue is this… WHAT ON EARTH is the point of buying a PC game in store when you only prompted to DOWNLOAD the game? Whats the point? It installs 4.7gb and you must download the remaining 25gb. Sure we have a measly 4mb uncapped line, but he installed like 6 games and had to download the rest and they already freaking shaped his line. I see no point with buying physical discs anymore if they force you to download the rest of the game. Its pathetic and sad that we are being forced in that way. Now I bought him the new Metal Gear on disc and well he cant play cause he has to download the rest. So in fact not only have I paid R599 for the game I also have to now make use of my ADSL to finish the download which is actually taking 2 days now. I miss the days when we could install a game and just damn play the game when we wanted to. To make matters worse Afrihost messed up on our line and the download stopped so when do we play a game I paid R599 for? Totally and utterly pathetic. I mean these games arent cheap and yet you need an additional ADSL line which costs roughly R790 for a 4mb uncapped line. Whats even funnier is that online their are games that cost more than in the store itself. A freaking digital download. No hardware used to put the game on disc. No printing or artwork etc and yet you pay full price and sometimes more. Sure you get loads of sales on Steam, but when I sometimes weigh out the price of new releases digitally verses physical media then it most times dont make sense. Sorry for the rant. I just feel all these things just messes up that excitement of wanting to pay legally for a game to play it when you want to. I used to pirate games cause I couldnt afford them. Now im at a point where I want to actually pay hard earned money for a game that was made painstakingly for years and yet you go through all this bullshit. Ok rant over.

I feel your pain man, I have a 3G contract, because Telkom doesn’t roll out lines to our area any more, so a game with a patch of 25GB on PC costs me my monthly subscription and an additional 500 to 600 just to finish the download within the same month… it is ridiculous….

I bought W3 physical version to save myself a lot of downloading. Galaxy fucked out, I had to redownload the game from scratch over the weekend in preparation for the expansion. 22gb for the game, 10gb for the patch & 550mb for the DLC. Less than impressed by that.

Now I have to dl the expansion because that physical version only contains a code. I knew that before buying though – I wanted the Gwent cards.

I saw that patch. I was so shocked. I never imagined how costly gaming has become until these things started to be implemented. You know what these isp’s should do? they should actually create an ADSL gaming package specialised just for gaming itself. Whether its downloading a game or patching a game. Like they have their business packages they should have a gaming package.
