More reviews, here: Mortal Kombat X Reviews round up

Mortal Kombat X is out tomorrow, and though the embargo is set for later today, there are a number of retail copies of the brutal fighter – so reviewers have been able to post their reviews without worrying about silly things like embargoes. In fact, we spent a considerable amount of time this weekend looking for a retail copy of our own, but not even CNA was willing or able to sell us the game – for which we’ve yet to receive a review copy. Unfortunately, we won’t have a review for you soon – but we can tell you what others think of the game thus far.

Gamertime, in its 80/100 review says:

M5h

To summarize it has to be stated that Mortal Kombat X is not a perfect game. It’s not a 10, neither a 9, however, the superior display of NetherRealm Studio proves that the ‘king’ is back and he is here to stay, as it is difficult to imagine for any game of the genre to be as spectacular. In a way it is a rejuvenation of the Mortal Kombat of the past, but the modern technology have only further improved it, and allows us to indulge ourselves in the magnificent creation that Mortal Kombat X is.

Giving it a 9/10, Thisgengaming says:

Mortal-Kombat-X-screenshot

Mortal Kombat X is another solid entry into the Mortal Kombat series, I thought it would be hard to top Mortal Kombat 9 but Neatherrealm Studio’s proved me wrong with this excellent game. The story mode is good, the amount of content will keep you coming back for months, the finishing moves are as brutal as ever! It’s everything I wanted Mortal Kombat X to be and then some. If you are a fan of Mortal Kombat then this is the easiest purchase of the year for you, if you aren’t a fan of fighting games then I’d still recommend it because of how fun the game is.

While PC Gaming Forum gives it 4/5, saying:

supermeter-1024x576

The presentation is great with nice slick UI and a good movie-like campaign, although the story could have been better, the graphics are nice and crisp that looks noticeably better than the previous title, and the gameplay is as great if not better with bloody brutality still being horribly awesome, with satisfying impacts from various attacks. A lot of content and replayability for solo play or offline / online multiplayer, more so if you’re connected. Overall Mortal Kombat X is a great fighting game worthy of the title and prince [sic] point, one that will keep you busy and satisfied until the next one comes out.

We’ll have our own review up for you as soon as we can – but we’ve been told not to expect it a review copy until after the game is out. Like many of you, we’ll be buying the thing tomorrow. We’ll also post some reviews later from larger, more established sites, so you can get a better picture of how good – or not – the game is.

What exactly is the deal with us and review copies though? Why are we always getting the games after/way after the release date? Is it a regional thing?…kinda sucks though, it’s not like our local sites don’t want to be comcompetitive.

There are a couple of reasons that I’ve been able to ascertain: Firstly, is that most local people still prefer physical copies of games, which with us being on the arse end of Africa, makes getting copies here a logistical nightmare.

Many earlier reviews are conducted on development/debug consoles (we have one for Xbox 360) that play early, pre-release code, but not retail games – but they cost a fortune, and people don;t exactly want to *give* them to us – for reasons that tie in to the last reason; We’re third world.

Publishers believe that the third world is a hive of scum and villainy that will leak games and pirate things without a care in the world, so they’re hesitant to give us games before they’re available elsewhere, because we’re so damned untrustworthy.

Shame on you for being an African!! Change your IP address and register a game website in UK and hack your way into a review copy…. There…. I helped…

Third world sites will sell them out to get ahead, huh? I don’t particularly BLAME them, we’ve seen it happen a lot but it’s still horribly unfair. Did not know about the debug console thing. Man, just seems like an endless cycle though, would be nice to have that edge as well and featured on those ‘review roundup’ articles on other sites.

Why are we always getting the games after/way after the release date?

It’s usually because the producers of the game are not wholly confident in their product to deliver all it promises or what potential buyers expect. That is, they do not want to risk bad pre-release press while pre-orders can still be cancelled. Pre-orders make or break most games in the same way the opening weekend in film is all investors measure success / failure against. It’s a business now, above all.

With MKX, even the pre-load downloading for its digital skews were held back until the last possible minute (as of writing, PC pre-loads seem to have been abandoned entirely) in order to mitigate leaked information from pirated copies of the game. It has to be said, these ’embargoes’ aren’t exactly a demonstration of confidence in one’s product…

Last day one game you bought was May 19th 2015.

With Mortal Kombat X, just wait till they release a copy with all the DLC included. Should even be cheaper then. You might still be playing that last day 1 game.

Not unless you want to get it sans its DLC-ransomed content (Predator, Jason Vorhess etc). The early footage shows a decent fighter, but nothing revolutionary and a step back taken for even step or two forward.

What is the point of a review embargo, set to the exact date of release? I mean really, I’d rather make a well informed decision in buying a game based on multiple reviews. For instance, it would simplify whether you buy a game like The Order, which scored horrifically or Assassins Creed: Aneurysm, this whole “Let’s release the game and pocket as much as we can from uninformed customers while we can” mentality is driving me through the bloody roof…. Anyway, glad to see a fighting game score more or less really good review scores, will be picking this one up in a while…hopefully….

The game will be a good Mortal Kombat game. Stiff fighting with cool Kombos. Get friends over and play offline. Online, you better hope a lot of South Africans buy the game because expect lag. The game might not last long, online. So get a online group of friends and plan a Kombat day, if you want to keep the game going.

Anyway it should be a good offline game to play with friends or alone while practicing to destroy the friends.

Yeah we do this very often. get a couple of friends over for the weekend and combine alot of pizza, beer and MK into one amazing weekend.

That for me is the best way to play MK, not online, not story mode or whatever. Just the pure bliss as you whip the friend sitting opposite you and you can enjoy the look of utter defeat on his face until he does the same to you the next day.

Already purchased this, will be playing as soon as I can!

Thank you for sharing our review.

@umarbastra:disqus we didn’t get a review copy, but the stores here in the Middle East were selling it before the release date ( the local stores started selling it on the 9th of April 2015 ) and since our sister site ” KSalue ” had the game we took the game to make the review .

Please note local stores here increase the price for 10 to 20 dollars because they are selling it before the release date

Hey, just a reminder before anyone jumps on Netherrealm for not contributing reviewable copies: the review embargo is set by Warner Bros; it is entirely their decision and it is currently their philosophy for nearly every game they produce.
