Emerald Nightmare, PvP Season 1 and Mythic+ released for World of Warcraft: Legion

After four weeks of grinding, the moment we’ve all been waiting for has arrived! The next step in the PvE and PvP experience is upon us, and now we enter The Emerald Nightmare to face Xavius who has turned some of our most trusted allies against us.

In case you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, today Blizzard released their first major content patch for World of Warcraft: Legion. This includes the new raid instance, The Emerald Nightmare, the first Player vs. Player Season and Mythic+ dungeons. The raid in particular is a continuation of the story as most players have now been capped in the ongoing story throughout Legion.

The Emerald Nightmare

This raid instance continues from the story in Val’Shara where Xavius corrupted a number of key characters such as Ursoc, Ysera, and even Cenarius. It’s unclear whether these characters are dead, or just corrupted by the dream, but you can be sure I am going to find out tonight come raid time. Raids take you through a scenario where you need to defeat one boss after another. This requires the teamwork of up to 30 players, with the optimal number being around 20.

The first release included Normal and Heroic difficulty, with Mythic releasing next Thursday. The raid is also the beginning of the great race where top guilds from around the world race to see who will be the first guild to defeat Xavius on the hardest difficulty. It’s an exciting time of us WoW-nerds, so excuse my excitement.

PvP Season 1

Player vs. Player got a significant change in Legion with the inclusion of Honor Talents and the Artefact Weapon. Players now have prestige levels which they can grind through the Honor system earned in Battlegrounds. The start of the new season of PvP is always exciting as players begin grinding the ranks and trying out the new PvP system.

There has been a lot of debate whether Blizzard have fixed PvP, recalling how terrible it was in Warlords of Draenor. This will be the true test as the world’s top PvP players begin their grind today.

Mythic+

Mythic+ is an interesting take on the dungeons which usually become irrelevant once raid content is released. Mythic+ are time based, similarly to Greater Rifts in Diablo III, where players race against the clock to set a time in clearing a dungeon.

Once you complete your first Mythic Dungeon for the week you will receive a Keystone which unlocks a specific Dungeon. Upon arriving at the Dungeon you place the Keystone in a pedastal which will give the mobs extra hp, do more damage, etc. Completing the Dungeon within the time will upgrade your Keystone allowing you to do another Dungeon at a higher level. The levels go up, but so does the difficulty and at the end of the week (before reset) you will receive a loot crate in your Class Order Hall containing loot at a level related to the highest Dungeon you completed.

This is what I will be doing for the foreseeable future, and plan to offer a short review on the raiding experience once we’ve completed it on Heroic (hopefully in about a week or two). So far the expansion has been incredible, arguably the best since Wrath of the Lich King. The Raid instance, PvP and new Dungeons will be the final test of Blizzard’s new expansion, but so far, so good.
